Infosys wins UN global climate action award in 'carbon neutral now' category

Bengaluru, Sept 27: Digital services and consulting major Infosys has won the United Nations Global Climate Action Award in 'carbon neutral now' category, becoming the only Indian corporate to earn the recognition for its efforts to combat climate change.

The announcement of winners came shortly after the UN Climate Summit in New York was convened by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres earlier this week. The award will be presented to Infosys at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP25) at Santiago in Chile during December.

"This year, we had over 670 incredible applications for the UN Global Climate Action Award. It is our pleasure to award Infosys," said Niclas Svenningsen, Manager of the UN Climate Change Global Climate Action Programme.

"Their pledge to become carbon neutral serves as a beacon, guiding us towards a more sustainable future for all. Infosys is helping the world transition to a low-carbon future -- providing a shining example of a scalable and replicable climate solution," he said in a statement.

Infosys began its action to combat climate change in 2008 with an assessment of its carbon footprint. In 2011, it made a voluntary commitment to the United Nations to become carbon neutral. The company has been on an accelerated plan focusing on energy efficiency, renewable energy, and offsetting emissions.

The UN Global Climate Action Awards are organised by the Momentum for Change initiative of the UN Climate Change Secretariat. The award winning projects are recognised for their innovative solutions that address climate change, and help drive progress on many other sustainable development goals like poverty alleviation, gender equality and economic opportunity.

Jewelleries worth Rs 50 lakh robbed at knife-point in Udupi

Udupi, May 25: In an early morning robbery, two miscreants snatched around 1.2 kilo grams of gold jewelleries from a jeweller and ran away in Udupi.

The incident took place at around 5:30 am near Beedinagudde junction when jeweller Vijay was carrying the gold for lapidary work from his house at Bannanje to his store at Sri Laxmi Towar in Beedinagudde.

They bumped into him when he going to the second floor of the Sri Laxmi Towar.

According to him, the miscreants who were wearing helmets threatened him with a knife then robbed jewelleries worth around Rs 50 lakh.

While decamping, the robbers also snatched his mobile phone and threw down from building.

Udupi town police conducted the spot investigation and registered a case. Further investigations are on.

Shwetha Rasquinha conferred doctorate by Mangalore University

Mangaluru, Jan 2: Shwetha Rasquinha, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Social Work, St Aloysius College, Mangaluru, has been awarded Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree by the Mangalore University for her thesis titled “Effectiveness of Social work intervention on caretakers of cancer patients- A social work study in Mangalore”.

She did her studies under the guidance of Dr Rameela Shekhar, Professor (Rtd), School of Social work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru.

Ms Shwetha Rasquinha hails from Vittal, D/o Vincent Rasquinha and Late Regina Rasquinha, and is the second person to complete doctoral studies from the Vittal Parish.

Her colleagues and well-wishers have congratulated her for her highest achievement in academics and successful completion of quality research.

Manipal's KMC among three private labs in Karnataka approved for COVID-19 tests

Mangaluru, Mar 25: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has so far given nod to three private laboratories in Karnataka for testing COVID-19. The ICMR comes under the Department of Health, Government of India

The three labs are KMC Hospital Manipal, Shankar Research Centre's laboratory, and SRL laboratory on Bowring Hospital Road at Shivajinagar, Bengaluru.

Eight private labs from Maharashtra, two from Haryana, three from Tamil Nadu, four from Delhi, and three each from Karnataka and Gujarat have been given permission.

These labs have over 15,000 collection centres all over the country. Blood samples and throat swabs of coronavirus suspects can be given at these centres.
