IPL cannot be run out of cricket’s future

The recent comment by Haroon Lorgat, Chief Executive of the International Cricket Council (ICC), that it would not incorporate the Indian Premier League (IPL) into the Future Tours Programme as this would open the door to similar demands by cricket leagues in other countries is perplexing.

The advent of T20 is changing the structure of cricket worldwide. The T20 game, earlier dismissed as a format that could never become popular, has changed the way the game is perceived, and given birth to a new format of club/franchisee games.

Format’s popularity

As evident even from Mr. Lorgat’s statement, leagues are springing up around the world in Australia, Sri Lanka, West Indies, England and South Africa among others. The very reason these leagues are functioning commercially testifies to the popularity of the format.

The ICC’s original structure is that of national teams playing each other in bi-lateral or tri-lateral tours where the domestic boards (the hosting board, in particular) have the right to the revenue generated during the tour, minus the expenses.

The club/franchisee system is striving to change a system in which players only represented their national or state or employer’s team to that of a structure where the choice is available to a player to choose a team he wants to represent besides his national duty. It propagates a system where players play for their domestic clubs on a regular basis and are called upon periodically to represent the country.

Is Mr. Lorgat’s statement indicative of an ICC strategy to retain control of the game that seems to be fast slipping out of its hand, with certain boards attaining power and the club system becoming popular?

It may be a good idea to have longer domestic tournament gaps, when all club games can take place and the players can decide which team they want to represent. This, while generating employment for a large number of cricketers and support staff, will also help create larger interest in bilateral/trilateral tours. The number of bilateral/trilateral tours could be limited to between three to five a year. Fewer tours in which the best cricketers of one country play against the best of another would bring the crowds back to the stadium for this type of cricket, for which audiences have been thinning due to the overkill prevalent now.

Domestic tournaments

In the light of the opposition from member boards, the ICC should consider cutting the long tour format for national sides in order to make space for domestic tournaments. They need to consider the fact that the long tours were devised in a different era to factor in longer travel time between countries. The world has moved on. In spite of its shortcomings, the IPL has come as a boon to the player community of world cricket. It generates financial security for international stars and domestic players. The IPL also provides a valuable platform to talented Indian youngsters who aspire to don national colours and display their skills on the international stage. Confidence to face tougher opponents is gathered by rubbing shoulders with the legends of cricket and learning from their vast experience. A young talent who fares well against a famous player would be better equipped to overcome the jitters which a debutant faces on the international scene. Mr. Lorgat would serve cricket better if he strives to accommodate the IPL rather than squeeze it out of the cricketing calendar.

Los Angeles, Feb 14: Tributes to the late Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers legend who died last month in a helicopter crash, will play a major role in Sunday's 69th NBA All-Star Game.

This year's annual showcase of league talent will be played in Chicago and feature numerous nods to Bryant, a five-time NBA champion who also matched a league record with four NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player awards.

Bryant, an 18-time NBA All-Star, died at age 41 on January 26 in a crash near Los Angeles that also took the life of his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others.

All-Star teams guided by LeBron James of the Lakers and Greek star Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks will compete to win each of the first three quarters, which will all start 0-0 and last 12 minutes.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the clock will be turned off and a final target score will be established by taking the leading club's cumulative score through the first three quarters and adding 24 points -- the number representing the jersey number worn by Bryant for the final 10 seasons of his NBA career.

The first team to reach the cumulative target score will win the NBA All-Star Game.

All-Star Game jerseys will also honor Bryant and his daughter.

Team Giannis players will wear jersey number 24 in tribute to Kobe while Team LeBron players will wear jersey number two, the number his daughter wore when playing youth basketball.

Both teams will wear jersey patches displaying nine stars, representing the nine people who were killed in the crash.

Academy Award-winning actress and Grammy Award-winning singer Jennifer Hudson, a Chicago native, will perform a special tribute to Bryant, his daughter and the others who were killed in the crash. Her performance will begin the night ahead of the player introductions.

James and Antetokounmpo each chose their squads from available starters and reserves voted and selected to the All-Star contest.

Team LeBron starters will include James, his Lakers teammate Anthony Davis, NBA scoring leader James Harden of Houston, Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers and Slovenian guard Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks.

Team Giannis starters include the Greek big man, Cameroon stars Joel Embiid of Philadelphia and Pascal Siakam of Toronto and guards Kemba Walker of Boston and Trae Young of Atlanta.

A record eight All-Star Game players from outside the United States also include Frenchman Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz on Team Giannis and Team LeBron reserves Ben Simmons of Australia and the Philadelphia 76ers, Lithuanian Domantas Sabonis of Indiana and Serbian Nikola Jokic of Denver.

Chennai, Jan 26: Former India cricketer Kapil Dev on Saturday said that it will be a big loss for the Indian side when MS Dhoni decides to hang up his boots.

"I think he has served the country so well and nobody has done it like him. Everyone has to retire sooner or later. He is not playing matches currently. So I don't know when he will come out one day and say -- I have had enough. I think it will be our loss because he is such a fabulous cricketer," Dev told reporters here.

In the recently released BCCI contracts list, Dhoni did not find a place for himself. The former World Cup winning captain Dev said that it is unfortunate that Dhoni was not included in the contract list.

"I feel sorry that they have not included him.

Tendulkar, Gavaskar had to witness the same. It's not my job and I am not there to give the contract to anyone. It is the job of the cricket board. So, I don't know. You can ask this question to the cricket board. They will be able to answer this question," Dev said.

The 38-year-old Dhoni is currently enjoying some time away from the game. He last played competitive cricket during the 2019 World Cup.

Dhoni had to face criticism for his slow batting approach during India's matches in the tournament.

Especially in the games against England and New Zealand (semi-final), he had to bear the brunt of netizens, who deemed him as the reason for the Men in Blue's loss.

BCCI released the list of central contract list of players for the period from October 2019 to September 2020.
