Jerusalem, Feb 14: In a setback to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli police have recommended that he be indicted for two case of corruption and breach of trust even as the beleaguered leader remained defiant and refused to step down.

After a 14-month-long investigation, police announced on Tuesday that it found enough evidence to recommend the stateâs prosecution to indict 68-year-old Netanyahu.

Netanyahu, the two time premier, faces prosecution in two corruption cases: a gifts-for-favors affair known as Case 1000, and a second scandal, called Case 2000, in which he is suspected of back-room dealings with Arnon Mozes, publisher of the popular newspaper Yediot Aharonot, to ensure more favourable coverage, Jerusalem Post reported.

He was chosen the prime minister of Israel in 2009. Previously he held the position from 1996 to 1999.

The police accused Netanyahu of accepting $USD 300,000 in gifts over 10 years.

Netanyahu addressed the nation the shortly before the police released their findings and made it clear that he would not step down.

"I feel a deep obligation to continue to lead Israel in a way that will ensure our future," he said.

"Over the years, I have been the subject of at least 15 enquiries and investigations. All of those attempts resulted in nothing, and this time again they will come to nothing," Netanyahu said in the televised address.

The prime minister, in the past, had also rejected both allegations claiming that "it is not illegal to accept gifts from friends" and that "Nothing will happen because nothing happened."

The case has focused primarily on Netanyahu's relationship with Israeli billionaire and Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan.

In exchange for the gifts, the police said, Netanyahu tried to advance a tax break that would have benefited Milchan, though he was blocked by the finance ministry.

"According to suspicions, the prime minister worked to advance the extension of the tax waiver for returning citizens over 10 years, a benefit that has a considerable economic value for Mr Milchan," the police statement said.

The police will now pass the evidence to the attorney general, who will make a decision on whether or not to indict the Prime Minister.

The decision is not expected imminently. By Israeli law, he is only required to step down if he is convicted and that conviction is upheld through the appeals process to the High Court, a process that could take years.

However, he could face public and political pressure to step down much earlier.

His coalition partners, so far, have backed him, saying they will not take down the government over a police conclusion.

These police recommendations come in wake of an ongoing campaign by Netanyahu to discharge the credibility of his investigators.

Netanyahu's attacks were made in response to remarks made by Police Commissioner Inspector-Generl Roni Alsheich, who hinted that Netanyahu had sent private investigators to collect information against police officers who are involved in his case.

On Thursday, Netanyahu said on Facebook: "Itâs shocking to see that he [Alsheich] is repeating the outlandish and false claim that [I] supposedly used private investigators against police officers."

Mumbai, Apr 30: Rishi Kapoor, the romantic star of many a Bollywood film who was diagnosed with leukemia in 2018, died in a Mumbai hospital on Thursday, his brother Randhir Kapoor said. He was 67.

Rishi, a third generation actor of the famous Kapoor dynasty, is survived by his wife Neetu Kapoor, actor son Ranbir and daughter Ridhima.

"He is no more. He has passed away," Randhir said.

Rishi was taken to the H N Reliance hospital by his family on Wednesday.

His death comes a day after after his "D-Day" co-star Irrfan Khan passed away, also of cancer. Three months ago, the disease claimed his sister Ritu Nanda.

"Our dear Rishi Kapoor passed away peacefully at 8:45am IST in hospital today after a two-year battle with leukemia. The doctors and medical staff at the hospital said he kept them entertained to the last.

He remained jovial and determined to live to the fullest right through two years of treatment across two continents. Family, friends, food and films remained his focus and everyone who met him during this time was amazed at how he did not let his illness get the better of him, the family said in a statement.

Rishi returned to India last September after undergoing treatment for his cancer in the US for almost a year.

In February, he was hospitalised twice.

He was first admitted to a hospital in Delhi where he was attending a family function. At the time, he had said he was suffering from an "infection".

After his return to Mumbai, he was again admitted to a hospital with viral fever. He was discharged soon after.

Rishi made his first screen appearance as a child artiste in his father Raj Kapoor's film Shri 420 , where he appeared in the song Pyaar hua ekraar hua . This was followed by "Mera Naam Joker". But it was in 1973, with the blockbuster Bobby , again directed by his father, that he made his debut as a romantic hero. He continued to be a favourite romantic hero for almost three decades.

His notable films as a romantic hero are "Laila Majnu", "Rafoo Chakkar", "Karz", "Chandni", "Heena" and "Saagar".

He was, however, more proud of his second innings as an actor, which he found more satisfying. His notable films as a character artiste are "Do Dooni Chaar" with wife Neetu, "Agnipath" and "Kapoor & Sons".
