Israel military fire tear gas to disperse Lebanese protest

February 26, 2017

Beirut, Feb 26: Israel’s military fired tear gas across the border into Lebanon on Saturday, breaking up a small Lebanese protest against cameras installed there, Lebanon’s National News agency reported.

Labnonprotest

Israel’s military said the protesters crossed the international border, prompting the dispersal. The UN peacekeeping force, known by the acronym UNIFIL, said it is investigating the various claims and that the situation later calmed.

UNIFIL is closely coordinating with the Lebanese Army and troops are still on the ground to ensure there is “no violation” of the UN-demarcated borders, said spokesman Andrea Tenenti.

Tenenti said there are no Israeli cameras that violate the UN-demarcated borders. He said the UNIFIL is in touch with both parties to ensure calm.

The protest by residents of Meiss El-Jabal, near the border with Israel, was led by a Lebanese lawmaker. The protesters were objecting to Israel’s installation of security cameras and a solar panel along the UN-demarcated border, which they call “contested.”

Lawmaker Qassim Hashim told reporters at the borders that UN-demarcated borders are a “withdrawal line,” and not Israeli territories. Another protester said in remarks carried by Al-Manar TV that the cameras are used to spy on Lebanon.

The Israel-Lebanon border has remained mostly quiet since 2006, when Israel and Hezbollah fought for a month-long war that left some 1,200 Lebanese and 160 Israelis dead, and ended in a stalemate.

Israel’s Army said dozens of protesters crossed the international border, prompting troops to fire tear gas to disperse the crowd “and prevent further infiltrations into Israeli territory.”

Al-Manar TV, affiliated with Lebanon’s militant group Hezbollah, said some people suffered shortness of breath because of the tear gas.

Riyadh, Mar 24: General Directorate of Passports (Jawazat) on Tuesday asked all expatriates in the Kingdom, who have a final exit visa or an exit and reentry visa, to quickly cancel them before their expiry. This is to avoid the prescribed fines for not availing of these visas before their expiry date, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The new measure was taken following the Saudi government’s suspension of international flights as part of the preventive and precautionary measures to stem the spread of new coronavirus. The Jawazat asked expatriates to verify the validity of such visas and cancel them through Ministry of Interior’s electronic service portals of Absher or Muqeem.

It underlined the need to adhere to the regulations and instructions in order to avoid fines prescribed by law against the violators.

Abu Dhabi: A senior Hindi teacher at Sunrise School in Abu Dhabi has died of coronavirus, it has been confirmed. Anil Kumar, 50, passed away on Sunday morning, May 24.

The sad and shocking demise of Mr Kumar, a senior Hindi teacher of Sunrise School on May 24, has left the entire Sunrise family in a pall of gloom, read a statement.

“The management, administrators, other faculty members, students and the school as a whole is struck with intense sorrow and is speechless.

“The bond that he had developed over the years, just as how we have with each faculty, makes the loss unbearable. The entire SEPS family is shaken and finds it hard to come to terms with this most saddening news.

“Anil Kumar was a very inspiring teacher. He always brought a creative aspect to the classes he handled and would make it an enjoyable class to attend to. Mr. Anil Kumar had a great way of motivating his students to do their best, and pushed them to be the best they could be. He was a great strength and support to the Department of Hindi, always willing to scaffold and mentor students and teachers. He was a very approachable man, warm and friendly at heart and that is something I will truly miss about Mr. Anil.

“Mr Anil Kumar has left behind his wife and two children. Mrs. Rajini, his wife is also a member of the school family. She is a faculty of the maths department. Our prayers and sincere condolences to each and every one of the family. May God give the strength to endure and face this most challenging phase of their life.”

It is learnt Mr Kumar fell ill with COVID-19 and had been in hospital since May 7.
