IT raids across Karnataka targeting JDS, Cong leaders amidst poll campaign; protest erupts

Hassan, Mar 28: Within hours after Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy expressed fear that “revenge politics” was afoot through “misuse of Central agencies”, the Income Tax Department carried out searches and seizure operations at multiple locations targeting JD(S) leaders late on Wednesday night.

Sources confirmed that multiple teams carried out searches in various parts of the Hassan, Mandya and Mysuru districts apart from Bengaluru. The main targets of the raids were CS Puttaraju, Mandya district in charge minister, and a few officials allegedly close to PWD minister HD Revanna.

Searches by the I-T department are being carried out at the residences of five businessmen in Bengaluru South. Three of the raided were affiliated to the JD(S) and two to Congress, a corporator said under the condition of anonymity. One of the persons raided is identified as Siddiq Sait, residing near South End Circle, Jayanagar. Identities of other persons raided are yet to be ascertained.

According to the JDS sources, the search operation started at 5am at Chinakuruli village, the native village of minister Puttaraju near Pandavapura. The search operations are carried out in Mandya town also. IT department team is also verifying documents at the residence of CS Puttaraju's relative in Vijayanagara in Mysuru city.

Reacting to the IT raids, Mandya district in charge minister CS Puttaraju confirmed that the IT raid started at early morning. "But I have proof and documents for even Rs 10 income. So why shall I bother? I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this raids," he said.

According to the police sources, IT department is carrying out a search operation even in the PWD department office in the Hassan city. "As per the information we received, search operation is on in PWD office and residences of a few PWD officers," said police.

It can be recalled that HD Revanna, CM HD Kumaraswamy's brother, is the state PWD minister. His son Prajwal Revanna is contesting from Hassan Lok Sabha constituency.

Protest

As the news of IT raids on the district in-charge minister who is also the minor irrigation minister CS Puttaraju spread, his supporters blocked the Pandavapura-Channarayapatna highway throwing the vehicular movement out of gear. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the highway. Additional police personnel are sent to convince the agitating activists.

Meanwhile, CS Puttaraju is on his way to Mysuru to meet the senior leaders of the party including CM HD Kumaraswamy to discuss the future course of action.

Mangaluru, May 18: A boat which was engaged in an operation to fix the pipe relating to the reverse osmosis plant of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) at Tannibavi turned turtle due to strong wind.

Two workers had gone missing in the incident that occurred on Sunday late evening, and one of them was rescued shortly thereafter.

The person who has not yet been found happens to be Pandu Pist from Mumbai. The person who was rescued was Santosh from Dakshina Kannada.

Three workers from West Bengal who were facing danger were also rescued.

Bengaluru, Mar 23: Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi cautioned private bus transport services operators, taxis and autorickshaws from exploiting commuters in wake of bus and train services being suspended by the government as precautionary measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

In a statement released here on Monday, Transport Minister Savadi said it has come to the notice that private buses, taxis and autorickshaws were misusing the opportunity and exploiting commuters. Inter-district bus services have been suspended in the districts wherein lockdown has been announced to protect the health of people and none should violate the decision of the government, he stated.

Transport and Police Department officials have been asked to taken action against those violating norms and exploiting commuters. Service providers for their profit cannot risk with the health of the people and repeated cases if come to the fore, they will not be spared, Savadi cautioned.

Government has taken measures to prevent spread of COVID-19. Private transport service providers and people should join hands and cooperate to contain it, he appealed.

Udupi, Jul 8: Four people have been arrested by the police in connection with the murder of Yogish Poojary (26), a resident of Laxminagara in Tenkanidiyoor in Udupi. A gang, which arrived in a car had attacked Poojary with lethal weapons on July 6.

The arrested are rowdy sheeter Sujith Pinto (37), his elder brother Rohit Pinto (43) Annu alias Pradeep (40) and Vinay (36). Police have continued the manhunt to nab two more accused – Girish and Anup. 

The accused were arrested from Kallianpur last night following which the accused were to murder spot as part of investigation.  The police also seized the car and knives that were used for the crime. 

Police sources said that the accused were under the influence of alcohol when the stabbed Poojary repeatedly with knives.

Three teams headed by sub-inspectors of Malpe, Udupi city and city crime branch took part in the operation.  The accused have been booked under station under section 143, 147, 148, 302 and 149 of IPC.
