IT raids in Karnataka: JDS woman leader had alerted Karnataka CM following cabbie’s tip

Mandya, Mar 29: A women’s wing leader of the Janata Dal (Secular) has claimed that she had alerted CM HD Kumaraswamy on Wednesday night about possible income tax raids on political leaders and their associates based on information from a cab driver.

The woman — who covered her face in the video in an attempt to conceal her identity — said the cabbie worked in Bengaluru. In the video, posted to social media immediately after news spread on Thursday about the statewide raids, she said the cabbie’s suspicions were aroused on Tuesday by bookings of a large number of SUVs to Hassan, Mandya and Shivamogga for the next day.

The woman, who JD(S) functionaries confirmed was a party leader in Mandya district, did not identify the cabbie or say what had confirmed his hunch that the vehicles had been booked to transport I-T officials.

“The cab driver called me [on Tuesday] and shared details about how many vehicles had been booked, what time they would arrive at the airport, and where they were heading to,” she said.

She then tipped off minister CS Puttaraju and other JD(S) leaders who passed on the information to the chief minister.

Kumaraswamy told reporters in Mandya on Wednesday night that he had “received information that up personnel were preparing to swoop down on politicians” ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Mangaluru, Mar 27: Nine throat swab samples that were sent for testing of the coronavirus, have been declared as negative while samples of four more persons are currently being tested, official sources said on Friday.

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B. Rupesh said that 2,902 people are under home quarantine in the district as of today while three were admitted to hospitals for observation.

Around 38,051 people have been inspected, so far, here in this district.

New Delhi, July 29: The government of India today announced Unlock 3.0, lifting of night curfew from August 1 and opening of yoga institutes and gymnasiums from August 5 while educational institutes will remain closed throughout August.

According to the Unlock 3.0 guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the lockdown in containment zones will be extended until August 30. The new guidelines will be in effect from August 1.

The operation of Metro rail and international flights will remain suspended. Cinema halls, swimming pools, entertainment parks, theatres, bars, auditoriums, assembly halls and similar places will remain shut. Large gatherings are also prohibited.

Yoga institutes and gymnasiums will start operating from August 5 for which the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will be issuing Standard Operating Procedures. 

Independence Day celebrations will be held with social distancing norms in place.

Restrictions on the movement of individuals during the night (Night curfew between 10 PM and 5 AM) have been removed.

According to the order, states have been given powers to prohibit certain activities outside containment zones or impose such restrictions as deemed necessary based on their assessment of the situation.

"However, there shall be no restriction on inter-state and intra-state movement of persons and goods. No separate permission/approval/e-permit will be required for such movements," the order said. 

In the previous two Unlock guidelines, the government had substantially opened various activities.

Mangaluru, Feb 9: A youth, native of Dakshina Kannada, was kidnapped and later robbed and then abandoned by a group of criminals, after he landed at the Karipur International Airport in Kerala early on Sunday morning.

In a complaint filed with the Kondotty police, the victim identified as Abdul Nazar Shamsad, said he was kidnapped while he was travelling in a shared auto from the airport to Calicut town. The kidnappers took him to an unknown destination where they tortured him.

Shamshad was reportedly subjected to physical assault and was asked to hand over the gold that he carried with him. It is learnt that the kidnappers had mistaken the youth for a gold smuggler and tortured him in order to get hold of the smuggled gold. They also stole his money and documents before abandoning him.
