It's a bird, it's a plane- no, it's 101-year-old miracle

New Delhi, Oct 8: Centenarians are expected to take life easy. But 101-year-old Man Kaur would rather throw a javelin or a shot put, hit the gym, eat like an athlete - and win a race.

Dubbed the 'Miracle from Chandigarh', she shot to fame after winning the 100-metre sprint at the World Masters Games in Auckland, New Zealand, earlier this year.

Kaur was recently in the news after she was denied a visa to China, where she was to have taken part in a championship.

But the grandmother, who now trains in Patiala after moving to the city from Chandigarh about a year ago, is not unduly troubled by that and is looking forward to her next sprint.

"Practice and participation in events give me happiness," Kaur told PTI over the phone from Patiala when asked what drove her to compete.

Though her achievements on the field are well known, not many would be aware of the secret behind her fitness at 101.

Talking about Kaur's wellness mantra, her son Gurdev Singh, who also takes part in international races and athletic events, said her diet was similar to that of any young athlete preparing for a competition.

"She has six 'rotis', prepared with sprouted wheat, sprouted 'Kala chana' and barley every day," he said.

Apart from the rotis, she has a diet of soya milk, seasonal fruits, juices and 'kefir' (fermented milk), which they get from Canada, Singh said.

Kaur also trains regularly, varying her regimen from day to day.

Her 79-year-old son said on some days she goes for a run, and on other days she practises her javelin or shot put throw.

"On certain days, she goes to the gym and does weight training," he said.

Asked what advice she'd give the younger generation, Kaur, who speaks only in Punjabi, said what any grandmother would.

"Eat well, eat healthily and exercise regularly. Don't eat unhealthy food and stay away from junk food. And be friends with good people," said Kaur, who took up athletics when she was 93.

While the mother-son duo has earned global laurels, it has not been an easy run for them in a country where cricket tends to elbow out other sports.

They rue that recognition and rewards have eluded them in their home country. "She gets so much love and respects abroad," Singh pointed out.

When they reached New Zealand, they found the world media waiting for Kaur.

"And when she won the gold in the 100 metres, top officials in New Zealand invited her for dinner to honour her," Singh said.

"But in India, there was not a single person who came to receive us at the airport," he added.

Singh, who along with his mother has taken part in dozens of Masters Athletic meets around the globe, hastened to add that lack of interest or accolades in India didn't trouble them much.

"We don't care about these things. We will continue doing what we love," he said.

Kaur, who has been nominated for the prestigious 'Laureus World Best Sporting Moment of the Year 2017' Award, won her first medal in 2010 at the Chandigarh Masters Athletics meet.

Laureus World Sports Awards, established by Laureus Sport for Good Foundation founding patrons Daimler and Richemont, honour remarkable individuals from the world of sports.

At the World Masters Games in Auckland this year, she won the gold in the 100 metres, clocking one minute and 14 seconds.

Run by an association of international federations, the Games seek to "promote lifelong competition, friendship and understanding between mature sportspeople..."

Kaur and Singh were last months denied a visa by China on the grounds that they did not have a personal invitation from the organisers of the Asian Masters Athletics Championships.

The mother and son, however, have moved on and already set their sights on the World Masters in Spain next year, as they continue to prove that age is just a number for them.

New Delhi, April 4: India skipper Virat Kohli has said that the 2014 Test series against England was the lowest point of his career.

He made the revelation during a candid Instagram Live session with former England batsman Kevin Pietersen.

To date, the 2014 Test series in England remains one of the worst Test series for Kohli as he averaged just 13.40 from 10 ten innings with his highest score being 39.

"I felt like as a batsman, you know you are going to get out in the morning as soon as you wake up. That was the time I felt like that there is no chance I am getting runs. And still to get out of bed and just get dressed for the game and to go out there and go through that, knowing that you will fail, was something that ate me up," Kohli told Pietersen.

However, just four years later, Kohli made a triumphant return to England as he scored a century in the opening Test of the 2018 series and finished as the highest run-getter in the series.

Kohli told Pietersen that the performance in 2014 came because he was just thinking about his own batting.

"2014 series happened, for all the younger guys listening, because I was too focused on doing well from a personal point of view. I wanted to get runs. I could never think of what does the team want me to do in this situation," Kohli said.

"I just got too engulfed with England tour - if I perform here, Test cricket, in my mind I am going to feel established and all that crap on the outside, which is not important at all," he added.
During the chat, Kohli talked about his favourite format in cricket and he also revealed the main reason for turning into a vegan.

New Delhi, Jun 13: West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has said that wicket-keeper batsman MS Dhoni is the biggest superstar in cricket and is one of the easiest guys to interact with.

Bravo was doing an Instagram live chat with former Zimbabwe pacer Pommie Mbangwa and it was then that the all-rounder was asked to talk about his stint with Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

"I think a lot of credit for CSK's success has to be given to Dhoni and Fleming, obviously the owners, they trust both Fleming and Dhoni, so there is no outside interference when it comes to decision making, both are very big students of the game, players love MS and it's an environment and franchise that allows you to be you," Bravo told Mbangwa during the chat.

"MS Dhoni is the biggest superstar in cricket and in our team. He was one of the easiest people to interact with, outside of the cricket field, he is like playing video games, his door is open at all times, whenever you talk about the biggest superstar and then you think a person like Dhoni is the most humble of them all. CSK is a special team and we have the most loyal fans," he added.

Bravo has been with the CSK since 2011. He has played a total of 104 matches for the franchise, picking up 121 wickets.

The all-rounder has also managed to win the Purple Cap (most wickets in IPL) two times (2013 and 2015).

CSK has won the IPL thrice (2010, 2011 and 2018) and all the titles have come under the leadership of MS Dhoni.

Thirty-eight-year-old Dhoni has been currently enjoying some time away from the game. He last played competitive cricket during the 2019 World Cup.

Dhoni had to face criticism for his slow batting approach during India's matches in the high-profile game.

This year, Dhoni did not find a place for himself in the BCCI's centrally contracted players list.

The board had released the list of central contract list of players for the period from October 2019 to September 2020.

Dhoni is the only captain to win all major ICC trophies (50-over World Cup, T20 World Cup, and Champions Trophy).

Under his leadership, India also managed to attain the number one ranking in Test cricket.

He would have been leading the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) if the Indian Premier League (IPL) had commenced from March 29.

However, the tournament has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Potchefstroom, Feb 9: Bangladesh clinched their maiden ICC U-19 World Cup title after beating favourites India by three wickets in the summit clash here on Sunday.

Set a revised target of 170 after a brief rain interruption, Bangladesh won the match with 23 balls to spare.

Sent in to bat, India's batting wilted under pressure as a superb Bangladesh bowling attack shot the defending champions out for a paltry 177 in 47.2 overs.

Yasashvi Jaiswal (88 off 121 balls) was once again a standout performer but not for once did he look like dominating the Bangladesh bowling unit whose new ball bowlers Shoriful Islam (2/31 in 10 overs) and Tanzim Hasan Shakib (2/28 in 8.2 overs) literally stifled the Indians for runs.

The third seamer Avishek Das (3/40 in 9 overs) was the most successful bowler in terms of figures but it was Shoriful's first spell with channelised aggression that put the Indians on the back-foot from the onset.

After a short rain break towards the end, the target was revised to 170 from 46 runs but Bangladesh reached 170 for 7 in 42.1 overs to win the match.

Opener Parvez Hossain Emon top-scored for Bangladesh with a 79-ball 47 while captain and wicketkeeper Akbar Ali was not out on 43 from 77 deliveries.

For the India U-19 side, Ravi Bishnoi was the most successful bowler with figures of 4/30 while Sushant Mishra had 2/25.

India thus missed out on a record fifth title in their seventh final appearance.
