Jacob Zuma asked to step down as President

Cape Town, Feb 13: South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) has formally asked the country's leader, Jacob Zuma to step down.

The decision to "recall" him "urgently" came after marathon talks held amongst ANC's top leadership body.

ANC secretary general Ace Magashule delivered Zuma's recall letter to the presidential guesthouse on Tuesday morning after the party's highest decision-making body, the national executive committee (NEC), decided that he should go.

Recalling Zuma is a powerful statement that the ANC no longer backs the President, but it alone will not force him out of office - Zuma must either resign or face a vote of no confidence in Parliament, reported CNN.

A no-confidence vote is scheduled for February 22 but opposition politicians were also pushing for the vote to happen this week. Zuma's term is due to end next year.

Zuma, had led the ANC since 2007 and has been South Africa's president since 2009.

Zuma's presidency has been overshadowed by allegations of corruption which he has always vehemently denied.

The 75-year-old faces more than 780 allegations of corruption relating to a 1990s arms deal.

The South African media are calling President Zuma's seemingly inevitable exit "Zexit."

Karachi, Jun 22: India-born renowned Pakistani Shia scholar and author Talib Jauhari passed away here after a prolonged illness. He was 80.

Jauhari, who was born on August 27, 1939 in Patna, is survived by his three sons, Dawn News reported on Monday.

He migrated to Pakistan along with his father in 1949, two years after the Partition.

After obtaining early education from his father, he went to Iraq where he studied religion for 10 years under the renowned Shia scholars of that time.

Jauhari, who was on a ventilator in the intensive care unit of a private hospital for the past 15 days, breathed his last on Sunday night.

His son Riaz Jauhari confirmed his death and said that the body has been shifted to Ancholi Imambargah for the funeral prayers, The Express Tribune newspaper quoted his son as saying.

Jauhari was respected among his sect as he was a class fellow of the widely revered scholar Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Husayni al-Sistani.

He was also a poet, historian and philosopher and authored many books.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has condoled Jauhari's death.

New York, Aug 3: The number of coronavirus cases confirmed all over the world has surpassed 18 million, while the global COVID-19 death toll stands at over 687,000 according to data from the Johns Hopkins University's Coronavirus Resource Center.

As of 06:00 Moscow time on Monday (03:00 GMT), there are 18,017,556 confirmed coronavirus cases in the world. The global death toll from COVID-19 stands at 687,930. The number of recovered individuals stands at 10,649,108.

The United States remains the country with the largest number of cases (4,665,932) and the highest COVID-19 death toll (154,841), according to the latest data from the Johns Hopkins University.

Beijing, Jun 4: Around 40 students and staff members of a primary school in China were stabbed by a security guard, official media reported today.

The incident happened at a school in China's Guangxi province, state-run China Daily said in a brief report.

Further details about the attack are awaited.

Knife attacks by disgruntled people have been taking place in different parts of China in the past few years, reported news agency Press Trust of India.

The attackers targeted mainly kindergarten and primary schools besides public transport, the news agency reported.
