Jaitley does not want BJP to win over 160 seats: Amarinder

Amritsar, Mar 27: Firing yet another salvo at Arun Jaitley, Congress leader Amarinder Singh today alleged that he did not want the BJP to win more than 160 seats to queer pitch for party's prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi.

Former Punjab Chief Minister and Congress candidate from Amritsar claimed that people like Jaitley and few others hope that in case BJP got less than 160 seats it will be difficult for Modi to become the PM.

"People of Amritsar would like Jaitley to clarify these charges against him", he said in a statement here, adding, "a man who cannot be loyal to his own party and own leader cannot be loyal to people of Amritsar either".

However, Singh said that Jaitley and his club will not need to really work that hard to keep the party's tally below 160, saying he would guarantee BJP will not cross 150 seats even.

The senior Congress leader also had a dig at the Akalis by calling them "self-professed and proclaimed patrons" of Jaitley.

He advised the "over-excited" Akali leaders to first ask Jaitley whether he was really interested and serious about winning Amritsar lest it subverted his '160 club' plan.

"In any case he (Jaitley) is not going to win from Amritsar and hence my advice to you is not to try to be more loyal than the king", he advised the Akalis.

Amarinder said, it was perfectly in accordance with the '160 club' game plan that the senior leaders of the party like L K Advani, Dr Murli Manohar Joshi and Jaswant Singh were humiliated and being pruned out.

BJP leaders however dismissed the talk of '160 club'."There is a Modi wave and we are working to cross the target of 272 seats," a senior BJP leader said.

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 31: Kerala reported its second COVID-19 death after a 68-year-old man being treated for the virus, died at the Government Medical College Hospital here in the early hours on Tuesday.

The victim, Abdul Aziz, a retired ASI hailing from Pothencode here, was admitted to the isolation ward on March 23 with the symptoms of the Corona infection. He was also suffering from lung and kidney diseases.

Though his first test result for COVID-19 turned negative, the second test result confirmed positive, official sources said.

However, it was not known from where he caught the virus infection. leaving chances for a secondary contract of a COVID-19 patient.

His funeral will take place as per the protocol, the sources added.

Kozhikode, Aug 8: Minister of State (Mos) for External Affairs V Muraleedharan on Saturday reached Kozhikode where Air India Express flight (IX-1344) crash-landed yesterday. 

He is likely to meet those injured in the crash and their family members.

At least 17 people including two pilots have lost their lives in the incident. However, the four-cabin crew members are safe, said the Air India Express in a statement. 

The injured are admitted to hospitals in Malappuram and Kozhikode, as per the state government officials.

Informing about his visit to Kozhikode, Muraleedharan tweeted: "Taking off to #Calicut by @airindiain
special flight. Hope to visit the crash site at the Calicut Airport and also meet those injured in the crash and their family members."

Muraleedharan on Friday expressed grief after an Air India Express plane carrying 190 passengers including 10 infants skidded while landing at Karipur Airport in Kozhikode.

"Deeply anguished to hear about the mishap in Calicut airport involving the flight from Dubai to Calicut. Was informed that the plane overshot the runway and seemingly nosedived," the Minister tweeted.

Hubli, Jul 12: Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi on Sunday said that the Monsoon session of Parliament will be held with the government ensuring all health precautions for COVID-19 are followed.

"Monsoon session (of Parliament) will certainly be held. The government will do all the formalities and take all precautions," the Parliamentary Affairs Minister told reporters here.

Earlier in March, the Parliament had passed 12 bills during the curtailed budget session with Lok Sabha passing 15 bills and Rajya Sabha 13.
During the session, 19 bills were introduced in the two Houses (18 in Lok Sabha and 1 in Rajya Sabha). The two Houses were adjourned sine die after completion of the budgetary process including passage of the Finance Bill.

The second part of the session was curtailed in view of the threat of the spread of coronavirus.
On June 1, Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla had held a detailed discussion on holding the ensuing monsoon session of Parliament in view of the coronavirus-induced norm of social distancing, sources said.

They said the leaders have taken note of reports suggesting that the fight against COVID-19 is likely to be a long haul.
