Janthakal case: HC tells SIT not to arrest Kumaraswamy till June 20

Bengaluru, Jun 16: Granting interim relief to former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy in the Janthakal mining case, the High Court of Karnataka on Thursday directed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) not to arrest him till June 20.hdk

Kumaraswamy had filed an anticipatory bail application before the high court after his advance bail was rejected by the Lokayukta Special Court on June 13.

During the hearing, Kumaraswamy’s counsel Hashmath Pasha submitted that his client was named in two other similar cases and had got bail from the Lokayukta Special Court. “Cases are being registered against my client in the same case with different case numbers. But this time, there has been abuse of the legal process,” he said.

Pasha said that there is an apprehension that his client could be arrested by the SIT. He sought an interim bail from the court till the disposal of the petition and said that his client would cooperate in the investigation.

Justice Rathnakala said that the SIT would not stoop to such a level while investigating into such issues. The judge directed the SIT not to arrest Kumaraswamy till the next date of hearing on June 20

and ordered notice to the SIT and directed it to file its objections.

The SIT has registered a case against Kumaraswamy after he was named by the IAS officer and an accused in the illegal mining case, Gangaram Baderiya.

He was booked for cheating, forgery, criminal breach of trust and giving false information, criminal conspiracy under the IPC sections. Kumaraswamy has been booked under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957.

The SIT had arrested Baderiya for according mining permission to Janthakal Enterprises in 2006. During the probe, in his statement, Baderiya said that the licence for mining was given on the instructions of the then chief minister Kumaraswamy.

The SIT had summoned Kumaraswamy to appear before the investigating officer. He later filed an anticipatory bail plea before the lower court, which was rejected on June 13.

Mangaluru, Aug 1: A teenage boy, who was critically injured in a road accident at Manchi village in Bantwal taluk, breathed his last at a private hospital in the city today.

The victim has been identified as Mohammad Unais (17), a resident of Bolanthoor village.  

The mishap occurred yesterday (July 31) at around 6 p.m. when Unais was riding a motorbike.

In his bid to overtake a speeding lorry near the Manchi mosque, the boy lost control over his motorbike, which first rammed into an auto-rickshaw and then collided with the same lorry. 

The impact was such that the boy was thrown onto the road. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Mangaluru. 

He breathed his last early today without responding to any treatment. 

A case has been registered at jurisdictional Melkar Traffic Police Station and investigations are on.

Mangaluru, Feb 10: Life of a 40–year-old man, who suffered a massive cardiac arrest, was saved by an ambulance driver who covered 80-km distance between Dharmasthala and Mangaluru in just 40 minutes.

The patient, a Chikkaballapur native sustained a heart attack near Sakleshpur on Saturday while he was on his way to Dharmasthala. He was provided preliminary treatment at a private hospital in Ujire, where doctors advised his relatives to shift him to a hospital in Mangaluru immediately.

The patient’s condition was critical and the odds were completely against him. Moreover owing to the ongoing double lane project work, the road too had been dugout. Despite all this, ambulance driver Hameed drove at a fast pace and managed to take the patient to the hospital within 40 minutes.

Bengaluru, Jun 14: Karnataka's Health Department has shut down four city clinics for not reporting Influenza Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) cases, which are COVID symptoms, an official said on Sunday.

"We have shut four Bengaluru clinics for not reporting ILI and SARI cases," a health official told IANS.

The clinics are Namma Clinic at Sahakaranagar, Panchamukhi Specialty Clinic at Peenya 2nd Stage, Mathru Chaya Clinic at Sudhama Nagar in Bommanahalli and Nayak Hospital in Gayathri Nagar.

"We gave notice to 17 clinics for not reporting ILI and SARI medical conditions in patients. Out of the 17, 13 reverted that they did not do and will start reporting," said the official.

However, the four named clinics did not revert leading to their shutdown.

According to the official, the clinics failed to adhere to the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1987, Disaster Management Act, 2005 and others.

All medical facilities and hospitals should report all patients with ILI and SARI symptoms as many COVID positive cases have them as underlying conditions.
