Jawan says food terrible, BSF says he's alcoholic

January 10, 2017

New Delhi, Jan 10: Hours after a BSF jawan deployed in Jammu and Kashmir alleged that troops are served poor quality food, the BSF released a statement accusing the soldier of being an "alcoholic and a habitual offender".

JawanYesterday, in a Facebook post and video, BSF jawan Tej Badur Yadav of the 29 battalion Seema Suraksha Bal - which is posted along the Line of Control - talked at length about what corruption in the force's administration and showed pictures of "poor-quality food". He alleged that the government wasn't to blame. It was the seniors, who sell supplies meant for the soldiers in the open market. He urged the prime Minister to investigate.

A few hours after he released the video, the border force alleged that Yadav has had a difficult past and that right from the start of service, has needed regular counselling.

"The soldier is a habitual offender of absenteeism without permission, chronic alcoholism and misbehaving with superior officers...For such reasons, individual (Tej Bahadur) has served mostly in headquarters under supervision of some dedicated superior officer", the BSF said in a statement.

After the video went viral, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also ordered an inquiry into the BSF constable's allegations.

"I have seen a video regarding a BSF jawan's plight. I have asked the HS (Home Secretary) to immediately seek a report from the BSF & take appropriate action," the home minister tweeted late last night.

Meanwhile, Minister of State (Home) Kiren Rijiju too has assured that any lapse in the welfare of defence forces will be addressed on priority.

"Welfare of our Security Forces is our absolute priority. Any anomaly to be dealt with firmly," Rijiju said, according to ANI.

In Yadav's video, filmed at an undisclosed location, Yadav said that the soldiers stand for 11 straight hours every day regardless of the extreme weather, but they are treated in the worst possible way imaginable.

"Neither the media, nor any minister tries to understand what we are going through (harsh weather). We live in the worst-possible conditions. After this, I will share three videos that will show how we are being mistreated by our officials. We don't want to blame any particular government, because they give us everything we need. But it is our seniors who see supplies meant for us to the local market, so it never reaches us," the soldier said in the video.

Yadav then proceeded to show pictures of the food they are served.

"I will show you that we get only one paratha in the breakfast that too without any curry, or pickle. We get it ( paratha ) only with a cup of tea. In the afternoon, I'll show you how we get ' daal ', its only turmeric and salt and nothing else, I will also show you the condition of the chapattis," Yadav said.

Reiterating that he is not blaming the government, Yadav further said that their rations are sold in the market, and called for the situation to be investigated.

"I request honourable Prime Minister also to look into the matter. Friends, I may not live once I upload this video, as my officials are very powerful. Kindly share the video as much as possible so that every media organisation come here and investigate and witness how soldiers are living," he said.

New Delhi, Feb 17: The Congress high command is likely to announce the party’s key troubleshooter in Karnataka, DK Shivakumar as the next state unit president with MB Patil as the working president, according to party leaders who spoke on condition of anonymity, in what could be a delicate balancing act between competing caste claims in the state..

Former CM S Siddaramaiah is likely to continue as the Congress Legislature Party leader, the leaders added.

The KPCC presidentship has been vacant ever since the incumbent Dinesh Gundu Rao resigned following the defeat in the bypolls, in which the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) won 12 of the 15 seats, ensuring a majority for itself in the state assembly.

The state leadership issue became contentious following that, with Shivakumar, a Vokkaliga, lobbying to ensure that his role as party’s main go-to man during difficult times be rewarded, the leaders cited above said. Patil, a former home minister and a Lingayat leader, was the favoured choice of Siddaramaiah, they added.

A former minister in the Siddaramiah cabinet told HT on condition of anonymity the appointment was now “just a formality”.

“How long could the current uncertainty continue? Shivakumar is a go-getter who can also help generate funds for the party. For instance, on the Bidar school sedition issue, we were late and started an agitation only after the accused got bail. With Shivakumar at the helm, we will be more aggressive and able to put the BJP government on a mat by highlighting all their omissions and commissions,” the former minister added.

The decision to appoint Shivakumar -- a seven-term MLA who served in the cabinets of former CMs S Bangarappa, SM Krishna, Siddaramiah and HD Kumaraswamy -- is likely to be a controversial one. He faces ongoing income tax and Enforcement Directorate (ED) probes, is currently on bail after being jailed by the ED in a money laundering case. He

In his 2018 poll affidavit, Shivakumar declared assets worth Rs 840 crore, making him one of the richest politicians in the state. His brother DK Suresh is a two term parliamentarian and is the sitting MP from the Bangalore Rural constituency.

Shivakumar’s latest move to build the world’s largest Christ statue in his constituency in Kanakapura has also come in for severe attack from Sangh Parivar outfits, who claim the land he donated was government-owned and illegally usurped by him.

Political analyst Manjunath said that Shivakumar, if appointed, is likely to inject a great degree of dynamism into the functioning of the party.

“He sees himself as a future Chief Minister and is very ambitious. If the appointments are confirmed, it will only vindicate the fact that the party high command has tried to balance caste interests by having a Vokkilga, a Lingayat and a Kuruba – the three leading castes in the state - heading different parts of the party. Also since the BJP is making a concerted effort to break into the Vokkaliga votebank, nominating Shivakumar would be a smart move to consolidate the community behind the party,” he said.

Bengaluru, Feb 23: Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers DV Sadananda Gowda on Sunday said that several "anti-national organisations" were misusing the platform of anti-CAA protests.

"We have taken serious note of it and have started an investigation. Several anti-national organisations are misusing the platform of anti-CAA protests and many people are trying to take political advantage of this situation," he told the media on Sunday.

Gowda said that the government is "very serious" about the issue. "We are already working towards this. Both the state and Centre are together investigating into this," he said and added, "We will ensure that we cut this and will not allow this to grow. We will investigate the organisers of the event as well."

"If you are inviting such people (alleged anti-national elements), it means that you either know about it or that you are indirectly encouraging such things. In such situations, the organisers too will be acted upon," he stressed.
