JD-U may oust Manjhi as Bihar chief minister

November 24, 2014

Patna, Nov 24: Speculation is rife in Bihar's political circles over the possible ouster of Jitan Ram Manjhi as the chief minister after he said his days in the office are numbered.Jitan Ram Manjhi

The speculation gained strength a day after Manjhi said his days in office were numbered as his detractors in the party were making every effort to remove him from the chief minister's post.

Manjhi said: "I know efforts are on to remove me, I may or may not continue till November end."

Manjhi, who belongs to the economically backward Mahadalit community, is known for his controversial remarks.

Hours after Manjhi's comment Sunday, former chief minister Nitish Kumar and Janata Dal-United (JD-U) president Sharad Yadav discussed for nearly two hours about political heat generated by Manjhi's controversial remarks in the past few days.

Nitish Kumar, however, refused to comment Monday on Manjhi's likely removal. "I will speak about it only after my ongoing 'Sampark Yatra' concludes Nov 29," Nitish Kumar told the media here.

According to JD-U leaders close to Yadav, some Bihar ministers, considered loyal to Nitish Kumar, have complained to him about Manjhi's controversial remarks and demanded his ouster.

A powerful group of JD-U leaders has been lobbying to remove Manjhi and reinstate Nitish Kumar as the chief minister. "A decision might be taken by the end of this month," a JD-U leader said.

However, some JD-U leaders close to Nitish Kumar said he was not keen to become the chief minister by replacing Manjhi.

Manjhi sparked a controversy within the JD-U when he said he would become a "supporter" of Narendra Modi if the prime minister granted special category status to Bihar. Besides, Manjhi said he could become the prime minister one day.

The Bihar chief minister's another recent remark that the upper caste people were foreigners and the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes people were indigenous also got him in trouble as several party legislators belonging to the upper castes demanded his removal.

The JD-U leadership has warned Manjhi over the such remarks, but Manjhi said he would continue to speak as usual. "I am not going to bow before anyone and would continue to speak as usual to express my views before the people," he said.

Without naming anyone, Manjhi said he was more knowledgeable than those advising him not to speak. "I am simply trying to communicate with the people in their language. There is nothing unusual in it," he said.

Hyderabad, Jul 12: Hyderabad MP and All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday condemned the demolition of a mosque and a temple inside the Secretariat building. He demanded the arrest of the contractor for demolition.
"During the process of demolition of the Secretariat building in Telangana, the mosque and temple were also demolished. The contractor must be booked and should be arrested. The public should know that we condemn this," he said while speaking to news agency.
Pointing out that his party MLAs Akbaruddin Owaisi and Moazam Khan have urged the state Assembly to look into the matter, he added, "We are not against the building of a new Secretariat, but what we asked for is not to destroy these structures during the process."
He welcomed the Chief Minister's announcement regarding the rebuilding of these structures.
"We expect the mosque to be built in the exact same place where it once stood. We expect the Chief Minister to speak to the representatives and meet our expectations and emotions about the mosque," he added.

Ghaziabad, Jul 28: Days ahead of Eid-ul-Adha, Nand Kishore Gurjar, a BJP MLA from Loni assembly constituency in Ghaziabad, has stoked controversy as he asked people celebrating the festival to "sacrifice their children instead of animals" on the occasion. He also claimed that "meat spreads coronavirus" so people should not be allowed to sacrifice innocent animals.

"People who want to sacrifice on Eid should sacrifice their children. I will not let people consume meat and alcohol in Loni. We will not let people sacrifice innocent animals because meat spreads coronavirus," the BJP legislator said while speaking to reporters.

"The way people have followed the guidelines of the government by not offering prayers and namaz at temples and mosques to contain COVID-19, in the same way, they must not give the sacrifice of animals on this Eid," he added.

"Earlier, sacrifices of animals used to be done in Sanatan Dharam as well. However, now coconut is offered instead. I request the Muslim brothers not to give 'qurbani' of animals. We will stop those who will perform the ritual animal sacrifice. We will not let this happen in Loni," he said.
