Bengaluru, Aug 31: Leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal (Secular) on Wednesday criticized the Congress leader and former Mandya MP Ramya, who had questioned the role of Sangh Parivar in India's freedom movement and urged the people to stay united.

The actor-turned-politician had claimed that leaders of Rashtriya Swayamsewak Snagh and Bharatiya Janata Party had supported British when Congress plunged into the India's freedom movement. “Today, BJP leaders talk of nationalism and patriotism to fool the people. Where were they during the independence struggle?” she questioned.

Reacting to her statements, JD(S) leader former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy said, Ramya should not issue such statements for publicity. “Farmers of Mandya district and the state are facing drought. She should concentrate on such issues,” he suggested.

“I have read about the freedom struggle in history books. There are contradictory opinions about V D Savarkar, Subhashchandra Bose and a few others. They have been portrayed as good and also bad leaders. Hence, one should be careful while issuing such statements,” he added.

Melkote MLA K S Puttanaiah, Ramya's remarks on RSS or its sister organisations were only indicative of poor understanding of the freedom struggle wherein a large number of people took part without an organisational banner.

“But, who is Ramya? What is her relevance in State or national polity? Why is she being so much importance at the expense several burning problems of the common man and farmers in the State? She has neither understanding of matters nor has the righteousness, yet keeps speaking on issues as per her own whims and fancies,” he said.

Meanwhile, BJP leader and Mysuru MP Pratap Simha, taking a dig at Ramya sought to know the role of Congress in India's first freedom movement.

“Ramya is an actor. In movies you can read scripts and act. But, in politics there will be no script. You should be careful before issuing any statement,” Mr Simha said asking her to learn history.

Udupi, Apr 24: While several state governments and NGOs are actively working to provide essentials to the needy amid the COVID-19 lockdown, a fisherwoman in Karnataka's Udupi has proved that even a small gesture of help for others can make a huge difference in the society.
A fisherwoman, Sharadakka, distributed rice to 140 needy families in her neighbourhood during the ongoing lockdown. The contribution was made by spending all her life savings amounting to Rs 30,000. The amount was saved by her over a period of time in an effort to build a house for herself.
On Thursday Udupi Deputy Commissioner G. Jagadeesh visited her and ensured help to build her house.
"Spending her meagre earnings, Sharadakka generously filled many empty stomachs amid the nation-wide lockdown, which is a matter of pride," said the Deputy Commissioner.

Dubai, Jul 5: Three Indians, who were repatriated on a chartered flight from the UAE on Friday, have been held in the state of Rajasthan after officials seized gold worth Dh2.2million from them, the government announced on Saturday.

They are likely to be placed under arrest along with 11 others, who were repatriated from Saudi Arabia, from whom gold worth Dh5.5million was seized, a statement from the government tweeted by Press Information Bureau in Rajasthan said.

The gold bars were hidden in emergency lamps, photos attached to the tweets showed.

The 14 passengers had arrived at the Jaipur International Airport by two chartered flights.

They were intercepted by the Customs team at the airport and 31.9kg of gold valued at Rs156,759,820 (Dh7.7million) concealed in the baggage was recovered from these passengers.

Three passengers arrived from Ras Al Khaimah by Spice Jet Flight SG9055 and 12 gold bars/bricks weighing 9.3kg valued at Rs.45,761,100 (Dh2.2million) were recovered from them, the statement said.

The Indian Consulate in Dubai confirmed to Gulf News that the flight was chartered by a private company for repatriating its employees.

It is suspected that the passengers were used as carriers to smuggle gold.

The other 11 accused had arrived from Riyadh and 22.65kg of gold bars, predominantly with Suisse markings, valued at Rs110,998,720 (Dh5.5million) were recovered from them.

“The said recovered gold bars have been seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962. The said passengers are being interrogated and are likely to be placed under arrest in terms of section 104 of the Customs Act, 1962,” the statement added.

Indian media had earlier reported similar cases in which stranded Indians were apparently lured to be carriers for smuggling gold on repatriation flights from various countries.

A spike in gold smuggling attempts using Indians getting repatriated after losing jobs was also reported from the Indian state of Kerala.
