JD(S)-Congress coalition hopes hinge on swaying four dissidents

Bengaluru, Jul 17: Top leaders of the JD(S)-Congress coalition are riding on the slim hope that at least four of their disgruntled MLAs who have quit, would have a change a heart and withdraw their resignations ahead of Thursday’s trust vote called by chief minister HD Kumaraswamy. A change of mind by a minimum four rebels is vital for the survival of the coalition if the Supreme Court’s verdict, set to be delivered on Wednesday, goes against it.

A total of 16 MLAs have resigned from the assembly, but the coalition is especially banking on CLP leader Siddaramaiah’s loyalists — ST Somashekar, Byrathi Basavaraj and N Muniratna — to change their mind and return to Bengaluru from Mumbai where they are currently holed up.

“Even three MLAs will do since we are confident senior Congress leader R Ramalinga Reddy will vote in our favour,” said a senior Congress leader.

However, in the same breath, the leader admitted that dissident legislators have reached a point of no return. It also appears Congress and JD(S) leaders have given up attempts to lure rebels back to the fold.

For the BJP to effectively defeat the trust vote on Thursday, it will need the strength of the assembly to drop to 208 from the present 224. Presuming the 15 MLAs currently sequestered in a luxury hotel in Mumbai — including the two independents, who have not resigned from the assembly, but have sworn allegiance to the BJP — abstain from voting, the strength of the House would fall to 209. All the BJP then needs if for one of the three other disgruntled MLAs — Ramalinga Reddy, Anand Singh and R Roshan Baig — who are in Bengaluru, to abstain to defeat the trust vote.

Reports had suggested senior leaders including chief minister HD Kumaraswamy and Congress leaders Mallikarjuna Kharge, DK Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah would fly to Mumbai to persuade disgruntled MLAs to withdraw their resignations. But there was little activity on Tuesday, except for Siddaranaiah visiting Congress legislator B Nagendra to enquire about his health. Nagendra, who was admitted to a private hospital for an undisclosed ailment, has, for some time, been identified with the rebel camp led by Ramesh Jarkiholi.

With barely a day left for the trust vote, the writing appears on the wall for the Kumaraswamy-led government. Political analyst Sandeep Shastri was of the view that Congress and JD(S) leaders have completely lost control of the situation.

“The SC’s verdict will not make much of a difference to the political situation in Karnataka,” Shastri said. “At the end of the day, if the MLAs are serious about resigning, whether disqualified or not, the speaker is bound to accept their resignations and that places the government in a minority.”

Bengaluru, Apr 18: The Karnataka government has managed to get the contact details of nine out of 10 foreign nationals who had visited Jubilant Life Sciences, a pharmaceutical company in Mysuru district's Nanjangud which has been declared a coronavirus hotspot, State minister S Suresh Kumar said on Saturday.

As many as 66 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Nanjangud.

While investigating the source of virus in what is now known as 'Nanjangud cluster', the Mysuru administration could get information that 10 foreign nationals had visited this town, Kumar told reporters.

Soon the External Affairs Ministry's help was sought which managed to track nine of them, Kumar said, adding that the MEA contacted its embassies in China, Germany, Japan and the USA to track these persons.

"Out of 10, they could contact nine and got details. All of them have said that they were all healthy and they did not have any symptoms.

Hence, they did not feel the need to undergo COVID-19 tests," the minister said.

He opined that many people do not show the symptoms but they could be carriers of the virus.

"It all depends on the person's immunity," Kumar explained.

A foreign national from Germany who had visited Nanjangud could not be reached as her contact details were not available.

Dubai: The father of a 16-year old girl who came on a visit visa to the UAE to visit him is desperate for help as she has been hospitalised, even as he has been rendered jobless.

On February 6, Amber D’Couto flew into Dubai from Mangaluru, India, along with her older sister, Alison, 19. The girls wanted to visit their dad Vivian D’Couto who was working in an automobile company at Jebel Ali.

The father was overjoyed to meet his girls until things took an ugly turn.

Two months into her stay, Amber fell seriously ill, even as D’Couto was served a termination letter by his company.

D’Couto said his daughter, a Grade 10 student, was perfectly healthly but suddenly developed high fever and began vomiting. She was rushed to a private hospital in Qusais which could not accommodate her because of the ongoing COVID-19 situation.

On April 30, she was admitted to another private hospital in the same area. After testing negative for COVID-19 thrice, she was diagnosed with acute pancreatis and Rheumatoid fever.

While the girl remains in hospital, the bill has spiralled to over Dh50,000, D’Couto said, adding that without a job now, he had no means to pay the huge amount.

“Amber is a very sweet child and a very bright student. She was living a very healthy life prior to coming to Dubai. But she is so ill now and under round-the-clock vigil in the ICU. The treatment for her condition is very specific and costly.”

A worried man, he said: “My daughter was on a visit visa and she had no insurance. We appeal to compassionate people to help us out in this difficult hour. Due to the current situation, I have lost my job and I am unable to pay for her medical expenses. Her condition has not stabilised yet and I am taking each day as it comes. I trust the doctors to help her recover, and we hope to be repatriated to India at the earliest so she can get further medical care.”
