Karwar, Mar 27: The Janata Dal (S) has announced its candidates for Uttara Kannada and Vijayapura Lok Sabha constituencies, which will go to the polls on April 23.

For Uttara Kannada, the JD(S) has chosen Anand Asnotikar, a former Bharatiya Janata Party leader who joined the party in January 2018 in the run-up to the Assembly elections.

Mr. Asnotikar was elected on Congress ticket in 2008 from Karwar, but resigned and joined the BJP. He became Minister for Fisheries in the BJP Cabinet of B.S. Yeddyurappa.

He won the subsequent polls from Karwar on BJP ticket, but lost in the 2013 Assembly polls.

Mr Asnotikar will take on union minister and BJP’s incumbent MP Anant Kumar Hegde.

In Vijayapura, the candidate is Sunita Devanand Chavan, wife of Nagthan MLA Devanand Phulsing Chavan. He had defeated the Congress’ Raju Alagur in the 2018 polls by a margin of 667 votes.

With the party struggling for a candidate in the constituency, only two names were making the rounds — those of Ms. Sunita Chavan and Ravi Chavan, brother of Mr. Devanand Chavan.

Hassan, Feb 9: Accusing the Centre for treating Karnataka as its enemy Former Minister and Congress leader UT Khader on Saturday said that the state did not get support from the Centre on the Mahadayi issue and flood relief and even the Union Budget.

Speaking to the media here, he said that the state has elected 25 BJP Lok Sabha members. Three from the state were Ministers in the Union Cabinet and another MP has been appointed president of the party’s state unit.

'None of them have spoken about the injustice done to the state in the budget. The budget document announced Rs 18,600 crore for the suburban railway in Bengaluru. But, ultimately the amount earmarked for the project is only Rs 1 crore. How can any BJP leader justify this?', the Congress leader wondered.

Bengaluru, Jul 19: A man protested in front of Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa's residence on Saturday alleging lack of medical care claimed the life of his one-month-old infant girl, police said on Saturday.

Venkatesh sat with the baby's photograph in front of the Chief Minister's house, saying the girl developed health issues on July 11 and he rushed her to a hospital, but it turned him away, the police said.

He said he had approached about a dozen hospitals and all of them refused to provide the baby any medical care. Eventually, the baby died.

This forced Venkatesh to hold a protest to draw the Chief Minister's attention to the issue, the police said.

The demonstration drew public attention and a few people joined him in the protest, they said.
