Mangaluru, Dec 29: Former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, who is trying to strengthen Janata Dal (Secular) in coastal Karnataka ahead of 2018 assembly polls, has said that his party would organise a rally in Nehru Maidan on January 9 and would highlight how communalism has hit the development of the coastal belt.

Speaking to reporters, the JD(S) state president claimed that the coastal belt, particularly Mangaluru, has the potential to overtake Bengaluru in development. But the “hidden communal agenda” of the Congress and the BJP was a hindrance for the overall development.

Mr. Kumaraswamy alleged that the two national parties have been exploiting and playing with the sentiments of coastal people on the basis of religion. It has disturbed the social harmony in the belt.

Calling the party’s next month’s meet here as “souharda rally” he said that people from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Kodagu would attend it. But anti-social elements having hidden agenda are not welcome to it, he said.

Mr. Kumaraswamy claimed that frequent communal related incidents in the coastal belt have created a fear psychosis among the people.

Such incidents being reported in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi has now spread to Uttara Kannada.

Miscreants setting afire the vehicle of Inspector General of Police (Western Range) in Honnavar recently gave scope for suspicion that the government was “stumbling” in maintaining law and order in the State.

He said that the Janata Dal (Secular) is hopeful of opening its account in the coastal belt in the 2018 Assembly elections. He urged the people to give the party a chance for a change.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said that the State government has not implemented the farm loan waiver announced on June 28 to about 23 lakh farmer families. The government has announced that Rs. 8,000 crore farm loan would be waived. “It is a bogus announcement,” he alleged.

Mangaluru, Jul 2: Mangaluru BJP Corporator Manohar Shetty, who entered a manhole to clean a drain, said that he did it to avoid waterlogging ahead of monsoon as people were facing several problems for the past few years.

"In my ward, there is a rainwater drain at Kadri Kambla junction and for the past few years, there was a waterlogging problem due to trash water used to collect and vehicles used to find it difficult to pass in that area," Shetty said.

"Since there was a lot of trash it had to be cleared to avoid waterlogging. We changed our dresses, and then I along with my three party workers entered manhole and cleared the trash," he said.

The Mangaluru BJP Corporator further said that it was not a publicity stunt, and he cleaned the drain to solve the problem of people. "During elections, I had promised people to get the drain cleaned. Since monsoon was coming; something had to be done; we did not do it for publicity but to solve a problem," he said.

New Delhi, Feb 6: BJP MP Tejaswi Surya said on Wednesday that the majority community has to remain vigilant or Mughal rule will return to the country, as he slammed the anti-CAA protest at Shaheen Bagh.

He was participating in the debate on Motion of Thanks on the President's Address in Lok Sabha.

Referring to the ongoing protest at Shaheen Bagh against the Citizenship Amendment Act, he said, "Unless majority community remains vigilant, the days of Mughal Raj may not be far away."

Surya also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for resolving several critical issues which had been pending for several decades.

The CAA, he said, was aimed at resolving the issues emanating from Partition and added, "The new India cannot to built without healing the wounds of the past."

He said that the CAA was about giving citizenship to persecuted minorities in Pakistan, Bangaladesh and Afghanistan and not for taking away anyone's citizenship.

Under the leadership of Modi, Surya said, several issues of the past have seen closure. These include abrogation of Article 370, construction of Ram temple, Bodo problems and abolition of Triple Talaq.

K Sudhakaran (Cong) said that a time when the economy was going through its worst phase and unemployment was high, the President in his speech talked about making India a USD 5 trillion economy by 2024.

On the comments of the government functionaries that fundamentals of the economy are strong, he said the same expression was used by the then US President George Bush, days before the collapse of the America's iconic investment banker Lehman Brothers.

Not only that, Sudhakaran said even before the Great Depression, the then US President used to say that fundamentals of their economy were strong.

Anupriya Patel (Apna Dal) demanded that the government set up All India Judicial Services Commission to ensure representation of the backward community in the judiciary.

Khagen Murmu (BJP) regretted that West Bengal government was not implementing the welfare schemes of the Centre in the state.

Badruddin Ajmal (AIUDF) said that people of all communities have fought for freedom of the country and it would be incorrect to declare everyone opposing the government's policies as 'gaddar' (traitor).

He said that the government should talk to people protesting against the CAA at Shaheen Bagh and other places, and explain the provisions to them.

Shrirang Appa Barne (Shiv Sena) demanded that the ruling party fulfil all promises it had made to the people of the country.

He regretted that although the government promised to double the income of farmers by 2022, farmers were still committing suicide.
