Mysuru, Jul 3: Janata Dal (Secular) leader and higher education minister G T Devegowda has raised eyebrows by warning Congress against accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP supremo Amit Shah of trying to topple H D Kumaraswamy-led government in Karnataka.

The minister’s comments come in the wake of several senior Congress leaders accusing the BJP of engineering the resignations in a bid to trigger instability in the coalition.

Speaking to media persons here yesterday, G T Devegowda went on to claim that even if the state unit of the saffron party had the capacity to topple the government, the central leadership is against destabilising the coalition.

He said that unlike state leaders of the BJP, Mr Modi and Mr Shah, who is also the home minister have the power to topple the government, but have no desire to engineer a collapse.

“The entire country respects Modi, who is a popular leader in the world,” Devegowda said. “Modi has great respect for former Prime Minister [and JD(S) patriarch] HD Deve Gowda. The Prime Minister is busy resolving problems in Kashmir. Modi and Shah have no intention of destabilizing the coalition government in the state. Let’s not point fingers at them.”

Asked why he was going soft on the PM, Devegowda said he was only appreciating Modi’s work. “If I speak about Modi, I am accused of being soft on the BJP,” he said. “I work with MLAs of all parties. If I speak about the BJP, rumours are spread that I am going to join the party. But I am a true JD(S) leader and will not switch sides.”

On speculation of midterm polls in Karnataka, Devegowda said: “No MLA wants polls now. There are only a few rich MLAs who can spend money on elections. Others don’t have the money.”

Kalaburgi, May 27: Karnataka's Kalaburgi district recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, as per information provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In light of the increasing mercury levels, people here were seen consuming sugarcane juice and cold drinks to beat the heat. Animals and birds could also be seen searching for water for relief from the scorching sun.

Locals of the area requested the district administration to take necessary actions such as spraying water on roads, in order to bring down the temperatures.

"We are facing huge heat waves in this district from the past two days, and even the temperature is around 44 to 45 degrees on a daily basis. So, it is a very alarming situation in Kalaburgi. When we move around the city, we are unable to find water and fresh fruit juice, and even if fresh juice is available, we are afraid of getting infected by COVID-19," said one local.

"If we carry cold water, it gets warm within half an hour, and gets unfit for drinking, and it is tough for us. I request the district administration to look into this matter and do the needful such as spraying water on the roads, etc. for slightest relief," he added.
