JD(S) plans own version of canteens, names it after Gowda

Bengaluru, Jul 28: Taking a cue from the Congress government’s Indira Canteen project, the Janata Dal (Secular) has come out with its own version called Namma Deve Gowda Appaji (NDA) canteen.gowda

Even as the ruling Congress is struggling to find space to start the canteens, the JD(S) has already set up one on 50 ft road, Hanumanthanagar, and will launch it on August 2. Based on its performance, the party intends to start one each in all the 27 Assembly constituencies of Bengaluru, a month after the launch of its first canteen.

The rate card will be similar to the Indira Canteens – tiffin comprising thatte idli, vada, khara bath and kesari bath for Rs 5 per plate, coffee or tea for Rs 3 and lunch for Rs 10. The star attraction in the lunch will be ragi mudde (ragi balls).

“We have kept ragi mudde as the special item in our lunch because it is the favourite dish of former prime minister Deve Gowda. It was Gowda who popularised ragi mudde in North India as prime minister,” said JD(S) spokesperson and MLC T A Sharavana, who is the brain behind the NDA canteen.

The JD(S) has no plans as of now to serve tiffin in the evening and dinner, but in the coming days, the NDA canteen would be upgraded. Sharavana said the NDA canteen should not be compared with Indira Canteen.

“The objective of Indira Canteen is to woo the voters. If that was not the case, why did the government wake up just a year before the election?” Sharavana said. He said Gowda inspired him to start the canteen.

“Every year, I send one lakh laddus to Tirupati to seek the blessings of Lord Venkateshwara and then, I distribute them among the people. Gowda asked me why not I start a canteen for the poor. There are lakhs of people in Karnataka who go to sleep hungry, for whom we will start the canteens. There is no motive other than feeding the hungry,” said Sharavana. He clarified that the canteen is for everyone and not exclusively for those from the economically weaker sections.

Reacting to the JD(S)’ plan, KPCC working president Dinesh Gundu Rao said the party had a habit of making announcements and never implementing them. “They (JDS) may announce or even start it, but how long will they run it? Where are the resources? Who is going to monitor the food quality? Indira Canteen, on the other hand, is a government programme that will continue to serve the masses,” said Rao.

Indore, Jan 24: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kailash Vijayvargiya on Thursday said that he suspected that there were some Bangladeshis among construction labourers who worked at his house recently.

Their “strange” eating habits aroused suspicion about their nationality, the BJP general secretary said at a seminar in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) here.

When a new room was being added at his house recently, he found “eating habits” of some of the workers “strange” as “they were eating only `poha’ (flattened rice)”, he said.

After talking to their supervisor and the building contractor, he suspected that these workers were from Bangladesh, the BJP leader said.

When reporters questioned him later, Vijayvargiya said, “I suspected these workers were residents of Bangladesh. Two days after I became suspicious, they stopped working at my house. I have not filed any police complaint yet. I only mentioned this incident to warn people,” he said.

Speaking at the seminar, Vijayvargiya also claimed that a Bangladeshi terrorist was keeping a watch on him for the last one and a half years.

“Whenever I go out, six armed security personnel follow me. What is happening in this country? Will outside people enter and spread so much terror?” he asked.

“Don’t get confused by rumours. The CAA is in the interest of the country. This law will provide asylum to genuine refugees and identify intruders who are a threat to the country’s internal security,” he added.

Bengaluru,  Aug 4: Karnataka has seen a substantial increase in COVID-19 recovery rate, which was 5.67 per cent in the last week, state Medical Education Minister Dr. K Sudhakar said.

"Every day there is an increase in recovery rate which is higher by 9.17 per cent in Bengaluru city. The overall recovery rate of the state by Sunday evening was 42.81 per cent and it is 35.14 per cent in Bengaluru," the Minister wrote in a tweet.

Minister Sudhakar also directed officials to resolve the issue raised by a woman who had written to him about her struggle to take possession of the body of her father in St. Johns hospital, Madivala.

The hospital she claimed was charging money to hand over the body.

"It is inhuman on part of the hospital to refuse handover of the body. I came to know about this incident in the media and responded immediately to help out the woman," Dr. Sudhakar wrote in his tweet.

Karnataka has so far reported 74,598 active COVID-19 cases, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
