Chikkaballapur, Feb 23: In a shocking incident, a Janada Dal (Secular) worker chopped off the left arm of a Congress worker at a saree distribution programme in Gauribidanur taluk of Chikkaballapur district yesterday.

Police said the incident occurred when a saree distribution campaign was going on at Arkunda village, Manchenalli and JD(S) and Congress workers clashed over an issue of election malpractice. A JD(S) worker, identified as Lokesh, grabbed a machete and chopped off Congress worker Ravikumar's left arm.

The 'Sankranti Suggi' program was being held under the auspices of Chikkaballapur MLA Dr Sudhakar's Sai Krishna Charitable Trust in the village in the evening.

Police added Congress leaders Srinivasa Reddy, Devaraj, S Ravikumar and Narayanaswamy were going door-to-door distributing sarees to women. They were resting in front of Ravikumar's house when the youth Lokesh attacked him.

At that moment, JD(S) workers were standing in front of a provision store opposite Ravikumar's house belonging to Goverdhan. They are Ramesh, Goverdhan, Lokesh and Narasimhamurthy.

Police said a skirmish broke out among the two groups about the saree distribution. Lokesh pulled out a machete from the provision store and chopped off the left arm of Ravikumar and injured the others. When Lokesh attempted to strike at Ravikumar, the later tried to defend himself by blocking with his left hand. But the blow was so terrible that he has lost most of his lower arm, below the elbow.

After administrating first aid, Ravikumar has been brought to Bengaluru for further treatment.

Manchenalli police have registered a case against Ramesh, Goverdhan, Lokesh and Narasimhamurthy who are all absconding. A pall of terror hangs over the village currently. The police have ensured tight security following the incident.

Superintendent of Police Karthik Reddy said that the actual cause for the clash is yet to be ascertained. "It will be known when Lokesh is interrogated," he added.

Bhopal, Mar 18: Congress leader Digvijay Singh's detention by police in Bengaluru is display of "dictatorship and Hitlarshahi" by the BJP, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath said here on Wednesday.

Singh staged a protest near a Bengaluru resort this morning where rebel MLAs of Madhya Pradesh Congress are staying, and demanded that he be allowed to meet them.

Singh, who has been detained by the police, accused the BJP of holding the MLAs captive and said that he would go on a "hunger strike".

Reacting to this, Nath said if the need arises he would also go to the Karnataka capital.

"Preventing Congress Rajya Sabha candidate and other ministers from meeting MLAs, misbehave with them, forcibly taken them into custody is totally a dictatorship and hitlershahi (sic)," Nath said in a tweet.

"Entire country is watching how an elected government is being made unstable and how BJP is murdering democratic values," Nath said.

"Why they are not allowing them to meet MLAs. What BJP is afraid of. BJP is playing a dirty political game in the state," the chief minister tweeted.

Demanding immediate release of detained Congress leaders, Nath said that democratic norms and Constitutional values are being stifled.

Later speaking to reporters, the CM said, "Why the BJP is afraid of presenting 16 MLAs here (Bhopal)? What is the problem in one person (Singh) meeting with 16 legislators?"

Nath reiterated that his government had proven majority on floor of the House in the last 15 months since coming to power.

Amid political uncertainty in Madhya Pradesh, the state Congress Legislature Party on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court seeking direction to the Centre and the BJP-led Karnataka government to grant it access to communicate with its rebel MLAs staying in Bengaluru.

The apex court had also directed the Kamal Nath government to respond by Wednesday to a plea by senior BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan seeking immediate floor test in the Assembly.

The BJP high command has decided to bring down Yediyurappa, Jarakhioli said. He added, "Yediyurappa had asked BJP high command to appoint him Chief Minister for six months and due to corona, his period has been extended. But now their own party sources have revealed that he has got only another six months."

While addressing the issue of different statements by BJP leaders and ministership aspirants after five MLCs were nominated, Jarakiholi said "Yediyurappa followers are not actual followers. BJP high command has already decided to bring down Yediyurappa as per their own party sources."

While speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, he said there are teams formed in the names of deputy CMs and there are many who are working in their party against Yediyurappa.

He also said that it's up to their party what they think about Yediyurappa's tenure, whether they keep him as CM or remove him. Being in Opposition, now Congress is only working on strengthening the party, he said.
