Jet Airways staff arrested for gold smuggling at Mangaluru Airport

Mangaluru, Jul 25: Sleuths of directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) on Tuesday nabbed an aircraft maintenance technician with Jet Airways at Mangalore International Airport (MIA) for his involvement in gold smuggling.

jet airwaysSpecific intelligence developed by sleuths indicated gold was being smuggling through MIA wherein bars of foreign make concealed inside toilets of aircraft coming from Gulf countries on their arrival here was being extricated locally.

Sleuths accordingly zeroed in on Lalbin Jeen, maintenance staff with Jet Airways who allegedly connived with smugglers and would board the aircraft on pretext of maintenance work and retrieve the concealed gold bars with a plan to hand it over to agents of smugglers later at a pre-designated place in the city. Acting on thos intelligence, the sleuths mounted surveillance at the airport in the morning and discreetly kept a close watch on the movements Jeen.

The officers intercepted Jeen once he alighted from Jet Airways flight 9W 531 that had arrived from Dubai. During interrogation, Jeen confessed to his crime and produced two packets from the back pocket of his trousers that contained 5 tola bars of gold each.

Jeen admitted he retrieved the same from the rear toilet of the said aircraft just a few moments earlier and was supposed to hand over the smuggled gold to an agent at a mall in the city in the evening.

Vinayak Bhat, deputy director, DRI said Jeen's remuneration for this work was fixed at Rs 20,000. Sleuths seized the smuggled gold weighing 1166.5 gms with a market value of around Rs 34.41 lakh, he said adding gold is liable for confiscation for violation of provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. The accused was produced before the CJM who remanded him in to judicial custody. Further investigation is underway based on leads given by Jeen.

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 30: With suicide cases being reported from various parts of the state after liquor sales were stopped in Kerala following the lockdown, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has directed the Excise Department to provide liquor to those with a prescription from a doctor.

The move comes after many reportedly showed acute withdrawal symptoms and suicide cases were reported in the state.

On Saturday, in Kodungaloor in Thrissur district, a youth committed suicide by jumping into the river after suffering from withdrawal symptoms.

In another incident, a 38-year-old man working in a barbershop in Kayamkulam consumed shaving lotion after he didn't get alcohol. Though he was taken to hospital after he developed uneasiness, he died.

The Kerala government has also asked the Excise Department to provide free treatment and admit people with withdrawal symptoms to the de-addiction centres.

The Chief Minister has said the government is also considering the option of online sale of liquor as the sudden unavailability of alcohol may lead to social problems.

New Delhi, Feb 20: The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed the non-bailable warrants issued against the state Director General of Police (DGP) and Inspector General of Police (IGP) by the Karnataka High Court.

A bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde stayed the non-bailable warrants while hearing a plea filed by the Karnataka government.

Earlier today, the apex court had agreed to hear the matter today itself after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta mentioned the matter before it.

Tushar Mehta had pointed that Home Secretary has been asked by the High Court to execute the non-bailable warrants and said that this order is "unusual".

Karnataka High Court had earlier issued non-bailable warrants against the top cops in a case.

Bengaluru, Mar 15: The Karnataka government on Saturday issued a statement saying that surveillance and containment measures against the spread of coronavirus have been increased in the state.

"In the wake of coronavirus scare, 104 Arogya Sahayavani (call centre) has reserved 20 lines for receiving calls for COVID-19," read the statement.

It also read that the dedicated seating at the 104 call centre has been increased to 40 and one person form 108 call centre will be responsible for coordinating with the ambulance services.

The statement also read that the government had arranged an orientation for the medical college staff to train them to deal with coronavirus patients.

While six people from the state were reported positive of coronavirus, the Union Ministry of Health, one amongst them was a 76-year-old man from the Kalaburagi region and he died due to co-morbidity.

The state Health Department Commissioner has said that the Telangana government has been notified about the man's death as he was also admitted to a hospital there.

So far, 84 people have been infected with COVID-19 in India.
