Benagluru, Nov 28: A 31-year-old spurned lover strangled an 18-year-old girl before hanging himself at the former's house in Marenahalli in Vijaynagar, West Bengaluru, on Monday evening.

Police suspect that Ramakrishna alias Krishnamurthy grew furious after Divya Kumar spurned his advances. Ramakrishna, of Marenahalli, had been working at a chicken stall run by Divya's uncle Madhu for the past 15 years.

Divya, a second-year B.Com student at a private college in Vijayanagar, was alone at home when the incident occurred around 4 pm. While Madhu had gone to Shivajinagar, Divya's mother Subhashini had been to a relative's house.

A few neighbours told the police that Ramakrishna and Divya were seen talking to each other near the main door. A little while later, they were heard screaming at each other.

Suspecting something wrong, neighbours called up Madhu and informed the police. The police arrived and found during a preliminary investigation that Ramakrishna had strangled Divya with a veil and then hanged himself in the same room. The Vijayanagar police have registered a case of murder and suicide.

The discharge of effluents from home stays and resorts situated on the banks of the river in the district has stopped due to lack of visitors. The discharge of waste water had made the river impure all these years.

The suspension of boat ride in Dubare has reduced the pollution from diesel motorboats in the river. For the last few years, the water quality of the river had reached 'C' category from 'B' category during the summer.
