Journalist wins Dawood hotel with Rs 4.28-cr bid

Mumbai, Dec 10: Amid suspense and reported threats, journalist-activist S Balakrishnan on Wednesday won the bid to take over ‘Delhi Zaika’ at Pakmodia Street, a hotel once owned by Dawood Ibrahim, the Karachi-based underworld don, here.

Balakrishnan, who is the founder of Desh Seva Samiti—an NGO—placed the highest bid of Rs 4.28 crore for the 500-sq feet property in South Mumbai.

Bids

The second highest bid was of Rs 4.27 crore by the Dawood Bohra Trust. The starting bid was Rs 1.18 crore.

The auction took place under the Smuggling and Foreign Exchange Manipulators Act, 1976 and Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances (Prevention) Act, 1985, atTHE DIPLOMAT HOTEL in Colaba.

“In the auction, the property has gone in favour of Desh Seva Samiti....it’s a huge amount to be paid....with the support of patriotic people, this is not big,” he said adding for them the cost would be more as they are so far not aware of arrears of property tax, electricity bill and water charges.

The properties include ‘Delhi Zaika’, previously known as Hotel Raunak Afroz, a green-coloured car (MH-04-AX-3676) and an around 350 sq-feet room in Mahavir Building in Matunga. Besides, four small plots in Daman, a Union Territory, also went under the hammer. The car with a reserve price of around Rs 15,000, was acquired by All India Hindu Mahasabha president Swami Chakrapani.

After CAA, Centre might bring population control law: Niranjan Jyoti

Mathura, Mar 2: Union Minister of state Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti on Sunday said after the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), the Centre might bring a population control law.

Jyoti claimed that she has already spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard.

She said she believes that this issue is under the prime minister's consideration and he himself has discussed the importance of bringing this law.

Jyoti arrived here on Sunday to attend a tribute meeting held at Swami Vamdev Jyotirmath in Chaitanya Vihar. Unnao MP Sakshi Maharaj was also present at the event.

"There was a time when abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir was impossible. It was feared that if such thing happens, there will be bloodbath. No one will be hold the national flag in Kashmir. But this government can bring any law in favour of the nation," Jyoti said.

"Now, everyone believes that if Article 370 can be removed...Prime Minister Narendra Modi can bring any law which is important for the country," she added.

"Maharaja" Humiliated, Madhya Pradesh Congress Pokes Jyotiraditya Scindia

Bhopal, Mar 12: The Madhya Pradesh Congress on Thursday took a dig at Jyotiraditya Scindia, who broke ranks with the party and joined BJP on Wednesday, by pointing out that neither Prime Minister Narendra Modi nor Amit Shah had not even put out as much a tweet to welcome him in the party, and construed it as "humiliation" for the "maharaja".

"Not even a tweet by Narendra Modi-ji or Amit Shah-ji to welcome Scindia-ji! Modi-ji, Shah-ji, at least do not do it so soon. It has not even been 24 hours yet and you guys have already started humiliating him...!" Madya Pradesh Congress tweeted in Hindi.

Taking a jibe at Mr Scindia, a member of the erstwhile royal family of Gwalior who ended his 18-year-long association with the Congress party on a bitter note, the state Congress said: "He is a maharaja, the one whose history is often mentioned by Shivraj-ji (former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan)."

On Wednesday, Jyotiraditya Scindia joined BJP in New Delhi in the presence of party president JP Nadda. He had resigned from Congress a day earlier after meeting Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mr Scindia will file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections on March 13. He is expected to go to Bhopal today.

No plan to extend 21-day lockdown: Govt

New Delhi, Mar 30: The government on Monday said there was no plan to extend the 21-day lockdown which came intro force on Tuesday midnight.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting tweeted, saying Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba has denied media reports claiming that the government will extend the lockdown.

"There are rumours & media reports, claiming that the Government will extend the #Lockdown21 when it expires. The Cabinet Secretary has denied these reports, and stated that they are baseless," it said.

The 21-day lockdown is aimed at checking the spread of the coronavirus.

Following the lockdown, there has been a massive exodus of migrant workers from big cities to their villages after being rendered jobless.
