Jubail factory fire leaves families of Mangaluru victims shell-shocked

Mangaluru, Apr 17: The families of the expatriate workers from Mangaluru region who lost their lives in a fire mishap at a petrochemical company in Saudi Arabia on Saturday were too shocked to react when the tragic news reached them.

fire3At least 12 people including Indian expats were killed and 11 others sustained injuries after fire broke out in Jubail United Petrochemical Company plant on Saturday during routine maintenance. Among the victims four or five are said to be Mangalureans.

Groom-to-be

Little did the family members of Vincent Monteiro, who are receding at Adyarpadavu, here, know that he would be charred to death on the day when was supposed to visit his hometown.

Sources closed to the aggrieved family said that Vincent's elders had requested him to postpone the vacation for a month as they were in search of a suitable bride for him. Their plan was to arrange Vincent's wedding during the vacation.

Being the fifth among six children of Late Lawrence Monteiro and Cristina Monteiro couple, 36-year-old Vincent was away from home for past 14 years as he was working in Mumbai, Dubai and Saudi Arabia.

No Eid-ul-Fitr

Another victim Mohammed Ashraf had planned to visit his home in Haleyangady during Eid-ul-Fitr which is nearly three months away.

The second among five children of late Abdul Khader and Zainabi couple, 30-year-old Ahsraf had been working as a pipe technician in Jubail for past three years.

His elder brother Mohammed Shareef was working in Saudi Arabia for the last eight years and Ashraf joined him three years ago. Even though both of them work for the same company, the elder one was in his room when the tragedy took place as he works the night shift.

In fact, Ashraf's service was regularised 11 months ago and he had visited his native in May 2015.

After hearing shocking news, his mother has fallen sick. A pall of gloom has descended on the house with neighbours visiting the family members and consoling them.

On the other hand, in Vamanjoor, the wife Balakrishina Poojary does not even know whether he is alive or dead. “Last night I received a message saying my husband is injured in fire mishap. I couldn't contact him after that,” said Lavanya. However, her neighbours said that they received information that Balakrishna breathed his last in the hospital. He was working in Saudi Arabia for the last two years.

Bengaluru, May 28: The Karnataka government has done away with previously mandatory COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic international travellers. 

The development comes a day after the government issued a circular, which allowed placing of international travellers into home quarantine if they had completed seven days of institutional quarantine.

A circular signed by Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary to the State Government, dated May 27, says that any “person who has completed seven days of institutional quarantine and is asymptomatic can be permitted for home quarantine with a COVID-19 test (RT-PCR), subject to undergoing a medical check-up.”

This check-up equates to thermal screening (with a required temperature of under 37.5C or 99.5F and pulse oximetry of under 94%). 

The circular added that all elderly people, over the age of 60, and those with comorbidities (such as Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, asthma, heart ailment, renal disease...etc) are “required to be clinically evaluated diligently prior to shifting them for quarantine.”

On Wednesday, Pankaj Pandey, Commissioner, the Department of Health and Family Welfare said that these new guidelines were based on recommendations from the COVID Task Force. A member of the COVID Task Force said that new strategies had been formulated based on the latest findings on how the SARS-Cov-2 virus affects people.

Madikeri, Apr 5: Following the novel Coronavirus and imposition of Lockdown in the country and departure of the migrant labour force to their hometowns, the harvest of Pepper and post-harvest process of Coffee have taken a hit in Kodagu region of Karnataka.

In the Coffee land, most of the workers at these estates are primarily from north Karnataka and neighbouring districts, including Periyapatna and Hunsur taluks in Mysuru District. Local workers are also sourced for the job as the harvest area is large.

The Kodagu district which already faced severe natural calamity during the last two years now added with the COVID-19 outbreak and the subsequent Lockdown, many workers have returned to their home districts, barring a few who have been working in the plantations for many years and reside in the estates themselves.

Bengaluru, Aug 4 : Without mentioning any party leader's name, Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar on Monday appealed to Congress workers not to make any "defamatory statement" against any political leader on social media platforms.

Taking to Twitter, Shivakumar wrote, "I appeal to Congress workers not to make defamatory statements against any political leader, on matters of health and other issues on social media platforms. It is not in our culture to wish bad for others. Congress is a party that exemplifies brotherhood and humanity."

His statement comes days after Rajya Sabha MP and AICC in-charge for Gujarat, Rajiv Satav comment where he suggested that introspection in the party should begin from the time of the United Progressive Alliance -II government.

Later, Satav took to Twitter to clarify his remarks at Thursday's meeting of the party's Upper House MPs. Satav, through a series of tweets on Saturday, said he was not comfortable discussing what goes on inside party meetings in forums outside.
