Kalladka Bhat didn’t incite the clashes; drop Ramanath Rai from Cabinet: BJP

Bengaluru, Jun 20: The principal Opposition BJP demanded in the both Houses of the legislature that the government remove Forest Minister B Ramanath Rai from the Cabinet for “misusing” his power to “target” senior RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat.

Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Jagadish Shettar said a video had surfaced which purportedly shows Rai directing the Dakshina Kannada SP, Bhushan G Borase, to arrest the RSS leader in the wake of recent clashes at Kalladka. “The minister has been caught interfering in the police work. He has directed the officer to file a murder case against Bhat. Rai should not continue as minister (sic),” he stated.

In a recent statement to the media, the SP had held drug mafia responsible for the Kalladka clashes. Preliminary investigation has proved that Bhat has nothing to do with the clashes. Though the enquiry is still on, the minister jumped to a conclusion and tried to influence the police, Shettar said, adding that he is ready to submit the video in the form of a CD to the House.

V Sunil Kumar (BJP) accused Rai of being responsible for communal clashes in the district. “How can the minister direct the police to conduct the investigation in a particular way? It is an effort by the minister to appease the minority community by targeting pro-Hindu leaders. Rai should be removed as the in-charge minister of Dakshina Kannada district,” he demanded.

Vishweswara Hegde Kageri (BJP) said the video was a testimony to the minister’s efforts to disturb communal harmony. The entire House should admonish the minister, he said. Congress members, including Agriculture Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, Mohiudddin Bava and Abhayachandra Jain, objected to BJP members, leading to a noisy scene in the House.

Raising the issue in the Upper House, BJP’s Tara Anuradha sought Rai’s immediate resignation.

“The government is committing atrocities against BJP and Sangh Parivar leaders in the coastal belt. Rai is misusing his powers. The government is nurturing political enmity and, voices of other political parties ar¬e suppressed. Rai’s action is a new model of terrorism,” she charged.

Minister denies charge

Later, Rai denied having directed the SP to take action against any particular individual and said he had only asked the officer to act against those who make inflammatory speeches. He said some members connected to the Sangh Parivar are involved in the murder of local leaders belonging to a minority community.

“Inflammatory speeches were responsible for the recent clashes. So, I asked the police to take action against those who make such speeches...

“Some members of the Sangh Parivar were arrested in connection with the violent incidents. I have never protected a murderer in my life. I am a secular person and I vehemently oppose religious fanatics,” he stated.

Home Minister defends Rai

Home Minister G Parameshwara defended Ramanath Rai, saying that being the district in-charge minister he has responsibility to ensure law and order and communal harmony. Rai instructing the SP is not wrong. But, the police can’t arrest anybody based on a minister’s direction. The police will have to probe the matter and take action as per the law,” he added. Two people were stabbed in the recent violence at Kalladka, which took a communal colour. “Bhat had made many provocative speeches in the past. The police had arrested him several times for his involvement in violence.

Currently, there is no evidence about Bhat’s involvement in the violence. The police are probing the issue,” Parameshwara stated.

New Delhi, Apr 29: WhatsApp on Tuesday said it will now allow up to eight people to connect on a group video call as an increasing number of people turn to digital platforms to connect with friends and family amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Facebook-owned company said over the last month, people on average are spending over 15 billion minutes talking each day on WhatsApp calls, well above a typical day before the pandemic.

"...we see that people all over the world are turning to voice and video calling on WhatsApp more than ever before. Group calling has been particularly useful and our users have asked to connect with more people at once," WhatsApp said in a blogpost.

Starting Tuesday, the company is doubling the number of participants one can have on a WhatsApp video or voice call from 4 to 8 people at a time, it added.

WhatsApp emphasised that like written messages, all calls on its platform are protected with end-to-end encryption.

"We have built group calling in a way that makes it available for as many users as possible, including people on lower-end devices and slow network conditions," it added.

WhatsApp said that to access the new, higher participant limit on WhatsApp calls, all participants in a call need to update to the latest version of WhatsApp available on iPhone or Android.

Video calling tools like Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Zoom and others have also seen a significant jump in userbase and traffic as people connect while maintaining social distancing amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Last week, Facebook had introduced Messenger Rooms that will soon hold up to 50 people with no time limit.

It had added that the company will also add ways to create rooms from Instagram Direct, WhatsApp and Portal.

Noting that between WhatsApp and Messenger, more than 700 million accounts participate in calls every day, Facebook had said, adding that video calling on Messenger and WhatsApp more than doubled in many countries.

Also, views of Facebook Live and Instagram Live videos have also increased significantly in March, it said.

Bengaluru, Mar 8: Lieutenant General Milind Hemant Thakur, Director-General of Supply and Transport Corps of the Indian Army, unveiled the renovated Animal Memorial at Agram Grounds in ASC Centre and College here on Saturday.

The animal memorial signifies the contributions of mules and horses of the Indian Army. These animals belonging to the Army Service Corps, who have rendered their services relentlessly during the war in the Himalayas, often paying the highest price of sacrificing their lives in the line of duty have been chronicled in the Memorial.

To ensure that these hoof prints do not get obliterated, on approval by the Government of India, their saga was brought to life in the form of a sculptured monument in the Equestrian Training Area of the ASC Centre and College.

This animal transport memorial has now been extended by constructing two walls supported by Roman pillars on either side.

These walls highlight the role played by the animals in the Indian Army since the British Raj. It gives details of 637 gallantry awards won by the brave muleteers, 49 battle casualties since independence, 14 gallantry awards to mules since independence and 05 military recognitions bestowed by the Chief of the Army Staff and other Army Commanders on AT units, who have been relied upon heavily to fill an important niche in the logistics networks of the Indian Army.

Gen Thakur also declared that 26 September each year has been nominated as the AT Remembrance Day as it was on this day in 1914, that 9th mule Corps, as part of the Indian Expeditionary Force, landed at Marseilles in France, to a most hearty and enthusiastic welcome by the French to support the British and allied armies in World War One.

Bengaluru, May 2: The Centre’s classification of districts created confusion in Karnataka as the state’s own categorisation deviates significantly from the health ministry’s list.

For instance, the Centre put the number of districts in the red zone in state at three, while the state Covid-19 war room puts it at 14. Bengaluru Urban and Mysuru figure in the red zone in both lists. While Bengaluru Rural with zero active cases on May 1makes it to the Centre’s red-zone list, it is in the orange zone according to the state.

In addition to these two, the state classifies Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Mandya, Bidar, Dakshina Kannada, Chikkaballapura, Dharwad, Gadag, Tumakuru and Davanagere as red-zone districts.

State Covid war-room authorities said they would take a look at the Centre’s criteria for classification and take a call. Besides, incharge Munish Mudgil pointed out that states are allowed to make additions to the red and orange zones. According to the Centre’s list, Karnataka has 13 districts in the orange zone and 14 in the green zone.

Sudan said, “the districts were earlier designated as hotspots or red zones, orange zones and green zones primarily based on the cumulative cases reported and the doubling rate. Since recovery rates have gone up, the districts are now being designated across various zones duly broad-basing the criteria.

This classification takes into consideration incidence of cases, doubling rate, extent of testing and surveillance feedback. A district will be considered under the green zone if there are no confirmed cases so far or if there is no reported case in the past 21 days.”
