Mangaluru, Feb 3: An elderly couple was brutally attacked by a group of miscreants, suspected to be activists of a saffron group at Kalladka in Bantwal taluk on Monday night.

The unprovoked and unexpected attack took place hours after miscreants belonging to two communities involved in a clash following a road accident in the communally sensitive town.

It is learnt that the miscreants waylaid and attacked 80-year-old Ahmed Ali and his 75-year-old wife Mariyamma, residents of Kalladka, when they were returning home after visiting a private hospital for routine health check up.

Both of them have sustained severe injuries in the attack and have been undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Mangaluru.

“I am suffering from age related multiple ailments including heart and blood pressure problems. My wife is also suffering from high blood pressure. We have to visit the hospital at least once in a week. On Monday we went to a nearby hospital at around 5 p.m. and when we started walking towards home it was around 8:30 p.m.,” says Ahmed Ali, who was not even aware of the group clash that took place in Kalladka prior to the attack.

“A group of 10 to 15 miscreants approached us and started hurling abusive words. Then they began to manhandle us. One among them attempted to hit on my head with a heavy stick. When I tried to escape it hit on my cheek,” he says.

Ahmed Ali’s 23-year-old son Abdul Razzak, who rushed to spot, was also attacked by the same group of miscreants. However, he was discharged from the hospital after treatment.

Mariyamma, who is in a state of shock, said that neither she nor his husband was aware why they were beaten by the mob without any provocation. “Our elder son is a daily wage worker. He has to take care of our family. Our younger son is mentally challenged. Who will bear our hospital bills now? Only Allah can help us,” she said.

Muslim body condemns

Strongly condemning the brutal attack by miscreants in Kalladka, Dakshina Kannada United Muslims Organisation has urged the police to nab the culprits immediately.

A delegation of the organisation led by its president K Ashraf visited the couple in the hospital on Tuesday to give them moral support.

“This is one more attempt by anti-social elements to disrupt peace in the society. Police should immediately arrest the culprits and give justice to this elderly couple,” said Mr. Ashraf.

Dear Shivaji,

From where you received that the aged couples are attacked by relatives? If it is true its inhuman. However, no relatives will attack the old couples such way where they cannot bear the pain. No media reported that the attack was by relatives, you have to clarify the source of your news.

This is not new in DK, RSS thugs and police attack aged Muslims people at thier home or outside. There are ample evidence, RSS thugs dressed in Police uniforms attacked homes in Ullala and other places in Mangalore recently. A MLC from BJP admitted that 60% RSS thugs are in Police force in Mangalore.

Kalladka is Communally sensitive since a long time, Police department sincerely work in this area to bring the peace.

Wayanad, Apr 21: Panic gripped residents of Mananthavady and Mepaddi regions of the district after several cats in the region were found dead.

A group of people approached authorities after which the Animal Husbandry Department tested samples from the carcasses and found that the cat deaths were caused by Feline Parvovirus, which does not transmit to humans.

Speaking to ANI, Dr D Ramachandran, Chief Veterinary Officer, Wayanad said that Feline Parvovirus affects cats and vaccines are available to protect cats and keep the virus at bay.

"There were incidents of cat deaths in Mananthavady and Meppadi region of Wayanad district creating panic among the local residents. The officials of the Animal Husbandry department visited the spots for epidemiological investigations. The samples were collected and sent to the State Institute of Animal Diseases, which confirmed that the deaths were due to Feline Parvovirus. There is no need to worry as this virus does not spread to humans," he said.

A cat owner in Meppadi said that within a span of two-three days, over 13 cats had died in the region.

"We are afraid of these sudden cat deaths amidst coronavirus outbreak. We have informed the Health Department and Animal Husbandry department. Officials came here and collected the samples," she said.

Bengaluru, Mar 28: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief DK Shivakumar on Saturday appealed to the authorities to arrange transport for migrant workers, stating that it is appalling to see their plight as they are walking hundreds of kilometres to their villages amid COVID-19 lockdown.
"Appalling to see the plight of poor migrant workers who are walking hundreds of kms to their villages. We cannot abandon our citizens, especially children, and put them at risk. Appealing to the authorities to arrange transport. Please take sufficient safety precautions as well," Shivakumar tweeted.
Hundreds of people, comprising mostly of migrant workers and their families, gathered at the Lal Kua in Uttar Pradesh from Delhi, Gurugram and other places, to take buses to their respective destinations amid the lockdown.
While the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had imposed a nationwide lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus, the Uttar Pradesh administration had decided to ply these buses to help thousands of migrant workers who were stuck in the national capital and had started returning on foot to their native places in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, among others.

May 6: Congress general secretary KC Venugopal on Tuesday termed as "inhumane" the government's decision to "impose excessive costs" on NRIs and expatriates for bringing them into the country from COVID-19-affected nations.

He demanded that the central government fly in the poor and vulnerable free of cost while charge the others with normal fares instead of high costs.

"The central government's decision to impose excessive costs on NRIs flying in special flights from the Covid-affected countries is an inhumane act," he said in a statement.

Venugopal said it was due to protests by a large number of expatriates and their relatives as well as the general public over the past few days that the central government took the decision to bring back Indian citizens from abroad.

"However, it is cruel that the Central government has taken advantage of this plight of expatriates by increasing the price of air fares up to three times. This is inhumane," Venugopal said in his statement.

He urged the Centre to take urgent steps to provide free travel to the most vulnerable, unemployed, sick and pregnant women and to others on normal fare.

Air India will operate 64 repatriation flights for a week from May 7 while the Navy deployed two ships as India rolled out a massive evacuation plan on Tuesday to bring back thousands of its nationals stranded abroad due to the coronavirus-triggered lockdown.

Those availing the repatriation flights will be charged, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri told a virtual press conference in New Delhi. A passenger on a London-Delhi flight will be charged Rs 50,000 and on a Dhaka-Delhi flight Rs 12,000, he added.

From the Gulf countries to Malaysia and the UK to the US, the multi-agency operation christened 'Vande Bharat Mission' will see the state-owned airline operate the non-scheduled commercial flights till May 13 to ferry around 15,000 Indian nationals from 12 countries.
