Mangaluru, Jun 15: Several Muslim families in Bantwal taluk’s trouble-hit Kalladka have accused the local police of barging into their houses at midnight and harassing innocent residents including women in the wake of recent communal disturbances in the region.

At least five persons including four women have been admitted to a private hospital in Mangaluru after they were allegedly manhandled by the cops, who forcefully entered into their houses last night in search of suspects in connection with Tuesday’s untoward incidents.

Nafeesa (52) and her son Musthafa (around 30), residents of KC Road in Kalladka, Rukiyya (53) and Maiyamma (50) residents of Manimajal in Kalladka and Maimoona (50), also a resident of Kalladka were hospitalized on Thursday morning.

According to them, a team of Bantwal town police station including SI Rakshit Gowda and constables Laxman, Vijayakrishna, Amanulllah, Abdurrahman, Udyakumar Bhat and Rajesh stormed into their houses at night and attacked the residents.

“This is not the first time the police are targeting us,” complained Rukiyya, mother of five girls and a man. “My husband is a beedi collector. Son Nazeer works as a car driver. I do not know why police target us after every untoward incident in Kalladka. My five daughters are there at home. We feel extremely insecure,” she said.

“The police had visited home at 10 p.m. on Tuesday in search of my son. Again they barged into home around 12:30 a.m. last night. I told them that my son had not returned as someone had hired the car for a long trip. However they pushed me away and began to search everywhere,” she said adding that her son is a hard worker, who never indulged in any kind of anti-social activity.

According to Nafeesa, around 10 policemen barged into her house at 2 a.m. “Where is your son Kulfi Iqbal,” they asked me. I replied them that I don’t know any person called Kulfi Iqbal. However a policeman forcefully pushed me. When I was falling, another policeman’s hand hit my neck. I am an asthma patient and feeling difficult to breathe after the incident,” she said.

“After mercilessly pushing my mother they began to question me. One among them held my neck and tore my shirt. Another policeman kicked me,” said Nafeesa's son Mustafa. “Then they abused my brother Ahmed Bava, who works in a Gulf country. He had come home nearly three months ago on vacation. The policeman took his passport along with them,” he said.

Maimoona, who is in a state of shock, said that the policemen tried to manhandle her pregnant daughter too. “We had kept the door open as those who had gone to mosque to offer Taraveeh prayers had not yet returned. Meanwhile a few policemen entered home asking for my son Jaafar. When I told them that he was yet to come, they threatened to arrest my husband and pregnant daughter,” she said.

Mariyamma, who is a heart patient, collapsed due to severe chest pain when the policemen forcefully entered her house at 12: 30 a.m. “They enquired me about my son Rasheed. I was shocked and collapsed on the floor. My daughter-in-law came to my rescue and took me to the bedroom,” she said. “My son takes care of his family. He is not a criminal. I do not know why police are searching for him,” she added.

Ahmedabad/New Delhi, Jan 22: Interpol has issued a Blue Corner Notice seeking information about controversial self-styled godman Nithyananda, who fled the country amid allegations of wrongful confinement of children, officials said on Wednesday.

A Blue Corner Notice is issued by the international police cooperation body to collect additional information from its member countries about a person's identity, location or activities in relation to a crime.

The Gujarat Police had sent a request to the CBI, the nodal body for Interpol matters in India, seeking a Blue Corner Notice against Nithyananda, the officials said.

"Interpol issued the Blue Corner Notice against the controversial godman this month," Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ahmedabad (rural), K T Kamariya, told PTI.

The police said they are now working to get Interpol to issue a Red Corner Notice, a global arrest warrant, against Nithyananda.

The Gujarat Police had registered an FIR against Nithyananda after two girls went missing from his ashram in Ahmedabad.

He was charged with kidnapping and wrongful confinement of children to make them collect donations from followers to run his ashram.

Nithyananda was earlier declared wanted by the Gujarat Police.

While police continue to look for him, reports emerged in December last year that he has created a Hindu nation, Kailaasa, with its own flag and political setup, on an island near Ecuador.

Belagavi, Feb 10: In comments that raised eyebrows, Ramesh Jarkiholi, who quit the Congress and joined the BJP and who took oath as minister last week, said his brother Satish has a bright future. The two siblings have rarely seen eye-to-eye — at least in public — in recent times.

He also trained his gun on Congress leader DK Shivakumar, sarcastically thanking the Congress MLA for his meteoric rise. “Had Shivakumar not stood against me, I would not have emerged as a tall leader in the state. I must thank him,” Ramesh said.

The Gokak MLA said Satish of the Congress, the most politically-savvy of the five Jarkiholi siblings, would reach “the top” in his political career. However, he advised him “to inculcate patience and adopt strategies”. “He should make his moves at the right time as timing is very important in politics,” Ramesh said.

He also urged Satish to keep his supporters happy. “Many of his followers are disappointed with his leadership because he does not extend a helping hand to his own people. In the present political climate, people do not endorse a leader who only talks about Buddha and Basava,” Ramesh said.

Ramesh took a dig at Lakan, the youngest sibling, saying, “Lakan speaks ill about me most of the time. He does not understand much. But we brothers are one when it comes to family. We are united when it comes to family matters, but when it comes to politics, we are at loggerheads.”

New Delhi, Jan 28: The Supreme Court of India today granted bail to 17 convicts sentenced to life imprisonment in 2002 Gujarat massacre case, pending their appeal before the Supreme Court.

The convicts also have to participate in social and spiritual services, said the court, announcing the riders for bail.

The Bench of Chief Justice of India SA Bobde and Justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant directed for the convicts to be segregated into two groups to be sent to Indore and Jabalpur.

District legal authorities in Indore and Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh have been asked to ensure that the convicts do the spiritual and social work the court has asked for.

The Supreme Court has also asked the administration to find them work for livelihood. The state legal services authority has been asked to file a compliance report as also report on their conduct.

The case concerns the mass killing of 33 innocent Muslims - mostly women and children - who were burnt alive at Sardarpura village in March 2002.

This was part of the mass massacre that swept through Gujarat in the aftermath of the death of train passengers on Sabarmati Express in Godhra on Feb 27, 2002. Thousands of innocent Muslims were killed and raped in the three-day violence. The victims include hundreds of children including newborns.

In 2016, the Gujarat High Court had upheld the conviction of 17 accused in the Sardarpura massacre case.

Earlier, a Special SIT court had convicted a total of 31 persons in the case, after three years of trial against 73 persons from Sardarpura and nearby villages.
