Kambala symbolises gallantry; people of Tulu Nadu should fight for it: Governor

Bengaluru, Dec 18: Karnataka governor Vajubhai Vala has urged the people of Tulu Nadu to promote Kambala, a traditional buffalo race and fight legally to defend it.

Speaking after inaugurating Tulu Literature Festival in the city on Sunday, he said that Kambala symbolises gallantry.

"Those with guts participate in Kambala. Man competes with buffaloes in 400 metres, 800 metres and one-kilometre races. How does it amount to animal cruelty? It is a pure sport. There is no harm to any animal. Instead, their strength will improve," he said.

The governor said those who do not like Kambala should play kabaddi or kho kho. "Let the government stay or change. There is an election coming up. This is a good opportunity for you, don't lose it. Politicians respond to your demand now," he said.

He also called upon the government to fulfil the demands of the Tulu people. "They are not asking for a separate land. They are peacefully demanding the right place for the language. It is the Centre's job to amend the 8th Schedule to include the language. However, the government should put pressure on the Centre," he added.

He said he will recommend to the Centre if the people demand recognition for Tulu language.

Mangaluru, Apr 15: A 27-year-old man, who died of breathing problem at Banglagudda in Surathkal, has tested negative for COVID-19.

The entire area was panic-stricken following his death on Tuesday evening. Suspecting COVID-19, his throat swab samples were collected, said Mangaluru North MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty. Now the test has proved he was negative for coronavirus.

The youth had collapsed suddenly on Tuesday evening and was rushed to a hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.

Bengaluru, Jul 9: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Thursday said the Covid-19 situation was “getting out of control a little” in some parts of the state, but assured citizens that authorities were taking necessary steps. 

“In some districts, it’s getting out of control a little. But the district administration and police are working day and night,” Yediyurappa said before the Cabinet meeting where the Covid-19 situation will be discussed. 

Speculation is rife that the government might consider stricter measures to curb the movement of people to try arresting the rising number of Covid-19 cases. 

Later in the day, Yediyurappa is slated to inspect the Bengaluru International Exhibition Centre, which has been converted into a Covid Care Centre with 10,000 beds. The chief minister said he had ordered “immediate” arrangement of more ambulances for Bengaluru, where cases are rapidly shooting up. 

“A team from the Centre had come. They’ve made some observations and they also appreciated us for some of the things we’ve done,” he added. 

On Friday, Yediyurappa has convened a meeting of all Bengaluru ministers, legislators, MPs and councillors to discuss the Covid-19 pandemic in the city.

Udupi, Jul 21: Udupi Court complex has been sealed down for two days for sanitisation after a judge tested positive for Covid-19, a source said on Tuesday.

The Covid cases in Udupi district which had reduced recently are once again seeing a spurt. On Monday, as many as 98 have tested positive taking the total cases in the district to 2,321.
