Kannada mandatory from Class 1 in all schools in Karnataka from 2018: Tanveer Sait

The chief minister Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government has decided to make Kannada mandatory from Class 1 from academic year 2018-19. The rule will be applied to all schools in Karnataka, including private, linguistic minority, and Central board schools.

Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Tanveer Sait, who made the announcement on Friday in Bengaluru, said children would start learning the subject from Class 1.

A circular to this effect has been issued and there will be no Kannada examinations in the first three years, the Minister said.

Exams will be conducted from Class 4. If any student from outside the State joins Class 4, then he or she will not have to write the exam for three years, till Class 6, the Minister said.

Stringent action, including withdrawal of no objection certificate issued by the Education Department, would be initiated in case of non-compliance, he added.

Mr. Sait has ruled out abolition of the Right to Education Act and said the State government would recommend suitable changes in the Act during a meeting to be chaired by the Union HRD Minister in January in Delhi.

New Delhi, Feb 26: The death toll in northeast Delhi communal violence over the amended citizenship law rose to 20 on Wednesday, according to GTB Hospital authorities.

On Tuesday, the death toll was 13.

"The death toll has risen to 20 today," Medical Superintendent of GTB Hospital, Sunil Kumar, told PTI.

Earlier, at least four bodies were brought to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital from the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital, a senior official said.

Kalaburgi, Jan 2: At least 10 students sustained injuries when a private bus carrying students of a school on an educational tour rammed into a tree today morning.

The mishap occurred when the students of Ayyappa School located in Chennaveera Nagar were going around the city in a bus during their tour.

The bus crashed into a tree near Venkatagiri Hotel on New Jewargi Road in the city.

A case has been registered at a traffic police station.

Bengaluru, Apr 19:  Karnataka's Technical Education department following Union Home Ministry’s guidelines, on Sunday directed all its colleges not to use the Zoom application to conduct online classes during the ongoing lockdown period.

Considering Union Home Ministry's advisory that Zoom app is not safe, the department has taken the decision and issued a circular asking all government, aided and unaided engineering, polytechnic (Diploma) colleges to stop using the app immediately.

The department recommended the use of a free app developed by TCS: "TCS iON Digital class room" or any other App recommended by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to conduct the online classes.
