Kannada mandatory from Class 1 in all schools in Karnataka from 2018: Tanveer Sait

The chief minister Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government has decided to make Kannada mandatory from Class 1 from academic year 2018-19. The rule will be applied to all schools in Karnataka, including private, linguistic minority, and Central board schools.

Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Tanveer Sait, who made the announcement on Friday in Bengaluru, said children would start learning the subject from Class 1.

A circular to this effect has been issued and there will be no Kannada examinations in the first three years, the Minister said.

Exams will be conducted from Class 4. If any student from outside the State joins Class 4, then he or she will not have to write the exam for three years, till Class 6, the Minister said.

Stringent action, including withdrawal of no objection certificate issued by the Education Department, would be initiated in case of non-compliance, he added.

Mr. Sait has ruled out abolition of the Right to Education Act and said the State government would recommend suitable changes in the Act during a meeting to be chaired by the Union HRD Minister in January in Delhi.

Evacuation flights from Muscat, Doha to Mangaluru via Bengaluru on May 20, May 22

Mangaluru, May 12: Air India will operate two flights - one each from Doha and Muscat - to bring back stranded Kannadigas from Qatar and Oman to Mangaluru next week.

The flight from Muscat to Mangaluru will be operated on May 20 via Bengaluru. It will depart from Muscat International Airport at 1.15 pm local time and reach Bengaluru at 6.15 pm. After the layover at Bengaluru airport, the flight will take off at 7.15 pm and land at Mangaluru International Airport at around 8.10 pm.

Doha – Bengaluru – Mangaluru flight is will be operated May 22. The flight will take off from Doha at 1.30 pm local time and will land at Bengaluru at 8 pm. It will take off from Bengaluru at 9 pm and land at Mangaluru airport around 9.35 pm.

Coronavirus: Infosys evacuates satellite office in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Mar 14: Infosys carried out evacuation at one of its satellite offices here on Friday after an employee came in contact with a suspected case of COVID-19, according to the company.

"We have taken a decision to evacuate one of our satellite buildings in Bengaluru as a precautionary measure, as one of our employees had been in contact with an individual with suspected COVID-19," the company said in its statement.

"Employees have been directed to work from home, and there is no impact on our client deliverables as a result of this temporary evacuation," it added.

On the other hand, Google also informed media on Friday that an employee at its Bengaluru office has tested positive for the COVID-19 and the firm has directed all its employees in that office to work from home as a precautionary measure.

"We can confirm that an employee from our Bangalore office has been diagnosed with COVID-19. They were in one of our Bangalore offices for a few hours before developing any symptoms. The employee has been on quarantine since then," Google had said in a statement. The search engine giant has asked colleagues who were in close contact with the employee to quarantine themselves and monitor their health.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.

Coronavirus, which originated in the Wuhan city of China, has so far spread to more than 100 countries infecting over 1,20,000 people. India has reported two deaths and 82 confirmed cases of the deadly coronavirus.

Mangaluru: 70-yr-old woman recovers from COVID-19; discharged from hospital

Mangaluru, Apr 12: A 70-year-old woman who tested positive for COVID-19 got discharged from a hospital here on Sunday after she recovered from the novel coronavirus, said Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner, Sindu B Rupesh.

Seven other patients have also recovered and discharged in Dakshina Kannada till date. Total number of active cases in the district has decreased to 5 now.

As many as 232 COVID-19 positive cases have been reported in Karnataka till date.

The total number of coronavirus cases in India on Sunday climbed to 8447, including 764 cured and discharged, 1 migrated and 273 deaths, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
