Kannur: CPM worker critically injured in attack by BJP activists

Kannur, Dec 28: A CPI(M) worker suffered serious injuries in an attack by suspected BJP workers at Panoor in the politically volatile district of Kannur in Kerala.

Police said the legs of 55-year-old Chandran were almost severed in the attack and he was rushed to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.

The ruling CPI(M) alleged that the BJP activists were behind the attack.

The attack comes a day after a bilateral peace meeting of the leaders of CPI(M) and BJP was held in Kannur in the presence of district collector Mir Mohammed Ali, in which both parties agreed to initiate peace efforts in areas that had witnessed violence recently.

In Thiruvananthapuram, CPI(M) area committee member of Vanchiyoor, S L Saju, was attacked by an armed gang late Wednesday night.

He was admitted to the medical college hospital in Kannur with serious injuries.

CPI(M) district secretary Anavoor Nagappan alleged that BJP-RSS activists were behind the attack. A hartal is being observed in the area of the incident.

On December 19, Praveen, an RSS worker, was critically injured after he was attacked by a group of unidentified persons in Kannur. He suffered injuries in the attack.

New Delhi, Jun 10: India on Wednesday reported a spike of 9,985 more COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the country's COVID-19 count to 2,76,583, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

279 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours taking the total death toll to 7,745.

The total number of active cases has reached 1,33,632 while 1,35,205 patients have recovered. While one person has migrated.

With 90,787 cases, Maharashtra reported the highest number of coronavirus cases in the country followed by Tamil Nadu with 34,914 cases.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 1,45,216 samples were tested in the last 24 hours while overall 50,61,332 samples have been tested so far.

New Delhi, Jun 13: India's COVID-19 tally on Saturday witnessed its highest-ever spike of 11,458 cases, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

A total of 386 deaths have been reported due to the infection during the last 24 hours.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 3,08,993 including 1,45,779 active cases 1,54,330 cured/discharged/migrated and 8,884 deaths.

COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra continue to soar with the number reaching 101141. Tamil Nadu's coronavirus count stands at 40,698 while cases in Delhi reached 36,824.

New Delhi, April 3: With 478 cases reported in the last 24 hours, the highest spike so far, India's tally of positive coronavirus cases on Friday rose to 2,547 including 162 cured/discharged and 62 deaths, as per the latest data of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

As many as 647 positive coronavirus cases have been reported so far from across 14 States whose linkage can be traced to the Tablighi Jamaat cluster at Nizamuddin, the Centre said on Friday.

"A total of 647 cases of positive coronavirus cases have been reported from across 14 States whose linkage can be traced to the Tablighi Jamaat cluster at Nizamuddin," Lav Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.

"The cases can be traced in Andaman and Nicobar, Assam, Delhi, Himachal, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh," added Aggarwal.

The Tablighi Jamaat event in Delhi has emerged as a hotspot for COVID-19 after several positive cases from across India were linked to the gathering including deaths in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Telangana.

An FIR was earlier registered against Tablighi Jamaat head Maulana Saad and others under the Epidemic Disease Act 1897, in the national capital.
