Kannur a pilgrim centre for BJP: Amit Shah

Kannur, Oct 28: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah has said that Kannur is a place of pilgrimage for party workers across the country as more that 120 BJP workers were ‘martyred’ here.

Addressing party workers at a public meeting after inaugurating the BJP district committee office here on Saturday, Mr. Shah said BJP workers in the country would uphold the party ideology for which the workers had laid down their lives.

‘First passenger’

A large number of party workers turned up for the inaugural function held amid tight security. Mr. Shah, visiting the district for the second time, reached the Kannur international airport in a special aircraft around 11.30 a.m.

It was announced at the function that Mr. Shah was the first passenger reaching the airport, scheduled to be inaugurated in December. After the function here, he visited the house of slain party workers Uthaman and his son Remith.

The 10,700 sq ft four-storey party office has a library in memory of the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a conference hall with videoconferencing facilities, three VIP guest rooms, an election war room, offices of affiliated organisations, a 250-seat auditorium, dormitory facilities, kitchen, and dining hall.

Party district president P. Sathyaprakash presided. Party State president P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, party leaders O. Rajagopal, MLA, V. Muraleedharan, MP, Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, C.K. Padmanabhan, P.K. Krishnadas and K. Ranjith were present at the function.

New Delhi, May 8: The Supreme Court on Friday suggested that states should consider indirect sale and home delivery of liquor as per its statute and law to avoid crowding at liquor shops amid the ongoing coronavirus-induced lockdown.

A bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan refused to pass any orders on a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking clarity on the sale of liquor and to ensure social distancing while it is being sold in liquor shops during the lockdown.

"We will not pass any order but the states should consider indirect sale/home delivery of liquor to maintain social distancing norms and standards," Justice Ashok Bhushan said while disposing of the petition.

The PIL, filed by one Sai Deepak, sought directions for closure of liquor shops for failing to enforce social distancing, which is essential to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The petitioner told the apex court that he only wants that the life of common people is not affected because of crowding at liquor shops during COVID-19.

Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, another judge in the bench, said that discussion on home delivery is already going on.

The top court, after hearing the petition complaining about flouting of safety norms at liquor shops, observed that it cannot pass any orders to different states but they should consider online sale and home delivery of liquor.

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 6: A 12-member team from Telangana on Friday visited Kerala to study how the state contained the spread of novel coronavirus.

Interacting with the team, Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja said, "The team will be given a presentation at National Health Mission and they will visit Alappuzha district to know how the health facilities are set up by Kerala Health Department on the grassroots level."

"The team comprising doctors and senior health officials will visit the control room set up by the Health Department and also will attend daily review meetings. They will also visit an isolation ward in the hospital and interact with doctors and nurses, " the minister said.

She added, "Kerala model is being followed by other states too. All states are working together and the country as a whole is fighting the coronavirus. They are sharing our experience. All of India is standing together. Contact tracing and isolation is the most important part."

Dr Mahaboob Khan, part of the Telangana team told media persons, that the discussion with the health minister was fruitful.

"Kerala was the first state in India where a positive coronavirus case was reported. All three positive cases reported have been discharged after testing negative. So we wanted to study how Kerala was able to contain it and the health system in place here, " he said.

New Delhi, Jul 31: With the highest single-day spike of 55,079 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, India's coronavirus tally breached the 16 lakh mark on Friday, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

With this latest spike, the total cases in the country stand at 16,38,871. Among these cases 5,45,318 are active. A total of 10,57,806 patients have been cured/discharged/migrated.

779 deaths due to COVID-19 have been reported in the country in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 35,747.

As per the Union Health Ministry, Maharashtra has a total of 1,48,454 active cases and recorded 14,729 deaths due to COVID-19.
Tamil Nadu has a total of 57,962 active cases and 3,838 deaths in the state.

Delhi has a total of 10,743 active cases and 3,936 deaths.

The Indian Council of Medical Research on Friday informed that a total number of COVID-19 samples tested up to 30th July is 1,88,32,970 including 6,42,588 samples tested yesterday.
