Kanpur building collapse: 3-yr-old rescued from debris after 15 hours

Kanpur, Feb 2: The NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) teams at around 3.30 am on Thursday pulled out three-year-old Lakshmi who was trapped under the debris for nearly 15 hours after a six-storey under-construction building collapsed in Jajmau area of Kanpur, on Wednesday afternoon.

NDRF team members said the rescue of the 3-year-old girl has raised hopes that more people will be pulled out alive. "Three-year-old girl Lakshmi was found to be sleeping, has been rushed to Lala Lajpat Rai hospital for necessary medical aid," they said.

"In the rescue operations taken up jointly by the National Disaster Response Force team, Fire and Emergency Services personnel and the police, meanwhile, one more body was retrieved from under the debris of the six-storey under construction building in Jajmau area of Kanpur that collapsed on Wednesday taking the toll to five," said district magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma.

The police identified the two deceased as Ramesh and Sarvesh Kumar, both natives of Maharajpur area of the district, while the identity of three others including the one whose body was retrieved on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday is yet to be ascertained.

Police have registered an FIR against the alleged owner of the building Samajwadi Party leader Mahtab Alam and the contractor. "On the complaint of a senior official of KDA (Kanpur Development Authority), who claimed that the construction work at the plot - which covers 387 mtr area, in Pritam Vihar Jajmau, to be illegal, a case at Chakeri police station has been registered under various sections of IPC against Mahtab Alam and contractor, who are on the run," said SSP Akash Kulhari adding that search operations are on to make their arrest possible.

The NDRF team members, who scanned the entire area using advanced equipment, said that around 30 to 50 people are still trapped. "The operation will take another 48 to 72 hours," said Alok singh of the NDRF. He said that the the NDRF teams are not being able to use advance equipments the way the building has collapsed. He said that if advance equipments are used then it could cause damage to the houses in the vicinity of the damaged underconstruction building.

He further said that one more team of NDRF from Varanasi has arrived at the site to advance the rescue operation.

In total now there are five teams of NDRF working hard to pull out the survivors from under the debris of the collapsed building. "We are taking the help of trained dogs and Victim Locating Camera (VLC) to locate those people who could be still alive but trapped. We are also using gas cutters and Hydraulic drill machines to reach deep inside the debris to locate survivors," said another senior member of NDRF adding that they had created a hole of 4x4 feet to reach third-storey, where maximum numbers of people are said to be trapped.

Police barricaded the site as controlling the crowd was becoming an issue.

Jun 25: A 16-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide at her house in east Delhi and her family members secretly buried her body, which was later exhumed for post-mortem, police said on Wednesday.

The girl, whose family hails from Jharkhand, allegedly hanged herself in a room in her house on Monday, they said.

No suicide note was recovered from the spot, police said.

Her body was exhumed on Tuesday as per the directions of the Sub Divisional Magistrate of the area. The process was carried out as her family members secretly buried her without informing the police.

The post-mortem will be conducted after Covid-19 tests, police said.

The incident took place on Monday. The reason behind her taking the extreme step is yet to be ascertained, they said.

Police said the girl lived with her mother and two siblings. The family hails from Jharkhand and are financially extremely weak. Her father died two years ago, they said.

After the father’s death, the girl's mother along with her siblings took her body to a burial ground and buried her, police said.

The police said the matter came to their notice after a neighbour alerted them about it. Following the information the body was exhumed, they said.

On questioning the girl's mother, she told police that she didn't know that one has to inform police in a suicide case, a senior police officer said.

Inquest proceedings have been initiated, police said.

Panaji, Feb 23: A MiG-29K aircraft crashed off Goa during a routine training sortie on Sunday morning, the Indian Navy said in a statement.

"The pilot ejected safely and has been recovered. An enquiry into the incident has been ordered," the statement said.

On November 16, a MiG-29K trainer flight had crashed after a bird hit, soon after it took off the Dabolim International airport, which functions out of the Indian Navy base INS Hansa.

Both pilots had managed to safely eject themselves to safety after both the engines of their jet failed.

According to data tabled in the recent budget session of the Goa Assembly, every ten days, at least one aircraft landing or taking off at Goa's Dabolim international airport faces dangers involving birds or stray dogs near the runway.

Kochi, Feb 6: A 46-year-old Thailand national was allegedly raped by two men here, following which they were arrested, police said on Thursday.

The accused hailing from a north Kerala district have been arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by the woman.

Police said the accused-- Mohammed Insaf and his friend Ansaruddin from Kondotty in Malappuram district were arrested after recording the statement of the victim.

The woman from Thailand had been a Facebook friend of Insaf for the last seven months after she enrolled her child in a school in Malappuram district.

The woman who came from Bangkok recently to visit her child and was staying in a hotel here.

When Insaf came to meet the woman, he was accompanied by his friend Ansaruddin and both allegedly raped the woman at the hotel room, police said.

All formalities including medical examination of the woman were completed, police said.

The accused will be produced before the court on Thursday, they added.
