Karachi, Jun 9: At least five persons, including four security personnel, were killed on Sunday night when heavily armed militants attacked the Jinnah International Airport's old terminal in Pakistan's financial capital Karachi.

Around five to eight men armed with explosives and ammunition dressed in airport security personnel uniforms entered the Fokker building at the old airport terminal, police sources said.

“Four personnel of the Airport Security Force (ASF) have been killed and one militant gunned down,” one police source told PTI.

Heavy contingents of paramilitary rangers and police have been called in and had surrounded the Fokker building where the attackers were holed up.

All flight operations at Jinnah Terminal have been suspended and all routes to the airport have been sealed.

“Heavy firing is going on near a building located just next to the Pakistan International Airlines head office,” one eye witness said.

The old airport area houses the PIA engineering and other departments and also offices of civil aviation and ASF.

Television footage showed a loud explosion inside the old airport terminal while heavy firing also continued to go on.

A source said the militants had also carried out hand grenade attack was on the Isphani Hanger.

The attackers are said to have forged fake ID cards of ASF and entered the area.

Staff is being rescued by the security personnel and moved to safer areas, reports said, adding that rescue teams are being allowed after being checked thoroughly.

The militants are said to have entered from the Fokker gate which is used by engineering staff to go to the runaway and hangers.

Scores of people have been injured in the attack.

Pakistan Army contingents were called in from the nearby Malir cantonment to tackle the situation as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif directed authorities to end the attack as soon as possible.

“Four airport security personnel bodies and a injured man have been brought to the Jinnah hospital,” Dr Seemi Jamali told reporters at a state-owned hospital.

TV news channels said upto 10 heavily armed men dressed in ASF uniforms forced their way into the old terminal building from different points and caught the security personnel on duty unaware.

“The four ASF men were killed by the attackers in heavy firing while one of the terrorists has also been killed in the crossfire going on,” one police official said.

Flights at the Jinnah international airports had been diverted to Nawabshah and Quettto.

“Security high alert has also been sounded off at the other airports of the country,” he said.

A senior police official said the number of the attackers was not confirmed as yet but some of them had managed to enter the runaway from the old terminal building and had fired and thrown explosives at the aircrafts parked there.

“It appears they want to damage the aircrafts on the runaway,” he said.

The old airport terminal is surrounded from one side by the Gulistan—e—Jauhar area and sources said some of the attackers had also entered the runaway directly from the Pehalwan Goth residential area by cutting the fences while others came in from the Fokker gate.

The attack is reminiscent of the deadly attack carried out by some 15 militants of the Tehreek—e—Taliban in May, 2011 on the Mehran naval airbase here in which the attackers killed some 18 personnel and damaged aircraft before being killed in a counter attack.

Washington, Apr 20: The US wants to send a team of experts to China to investigate coronavirus, President Donald Trump has said, a day after he warned Beijing of "consequences" if it was knowingly responsible for the spread of COVID-19 which has killed more than 165,000 people globally, including over 41,000 in America.

Describing the coronavirus as a plague, Trump, during his White House news conference on Sunday, said that he is not happy with China where the pandemic emerged in December last year in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.

“We spoke to them (Chinese) a long time ago about going in. We want to go in. We want to see what's going on. And we weren't exactly invited, I can tell you that,” the President told reporters.

“I was very happy with the (trade) deal (with China), very happy with everything and then we found out about the plague and since we found out about that I'm not happy,” he said.

The US has launched an investigation into whether the deadly virus "escaped" from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

He has repeatedly expressed disappointment over China's handling of the coronavirus disease, alleged non-transparency and initial non-cooperation from Beijing with Washington on dealing with the crisis.

“Based on an investigation, we are going to find out,” Trump told reporters.

A day earlier, he warned China that it should face consequences if it was "knowingly responsible" for the spread of the novel coronavirus, upping the ante on Beijing over its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“If they (China) were knowingly responsible… then there should be consequences. You're talking about, you know, potentially lives like nobody's seen since 1917,” Trump said on Saturday.

The opposition Democratic Party said that Trump has falsely claimed he acted early by restricting travel from China when it was little too late and he continued to downplay the virus throughout February.

The number of COVID-19 deaths in the US crossed 41,000 and the total infections were more than 764,000 so far.

New York, the epicentre of the deadly COVID-19 in the US, has 2,42,000 cases and over 17,600 fatalities so far. It has registered a 50-percent decline in new cases over an eight-day period.

The novel virus, which emerged in China in December last year, has killed over 160,000 and infected more than 2.3 million people worldwide.

Islamabad, Feb 26: Islamabad on Tuesday declared former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif an absconder while simultaneously denying extending bail to him.

The federal cabinet presided over by Prime Minister Imran Khan, cited that Sharif failed to provide required medical reports and has violated the bail terms.

The government has also decided to freeze gas and electricity tariffs for the next four months, The Dawn reported.

"After Nawaz Sharif failed to submit his medical report of any hospital in London, the medical board rejected a medical certificate sent by him and [the government] declared him an absconder. From today, Nawaz Sharif is an absconder according to the law of land and if he does not return to the country he will be declared a proclaimed offender," said Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information, in a press conference.

She further asserted that the Punjab government, which was authorized by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to decide Sharif's case on medical grounds, had written several letters asking him to submit his medical report from any hospital in London. However, he failed to do so and only sent a certificate that was not accepted by the medical board.

"If he (Nawaz Sharif) is seriously ill then why a comprehensive medical report is not being submitted to the medical board," Firdous added.

Further, she said that the office of the opposition leader was also waiting for his younger brother and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif, who was also staying in London for 'no reason'.

"He is getting a monthly salary and enjoying luxurious offices and other perks and privileges but not performing his duties required by his office and the people. Shahbaz Sahib, return to the country and justify your salary and other benefits being given from taxpayers' money," Firdous added.

On October 29 last year, the IHC granted bail for eight weeks to Sharif, who was convicted and disqualified in corruption cases, on medical grounds.

Sharif left Pakistan for London along with Shahbaz on November 19, 2019, for his medical treatments there.
