Karnataka to amend law to allow private players to import sand

Bengaluru, Oct 31: The state government is planning to amend the Karnataka Minor Minerals Concession Rules to allow private players to import sand, Law Minister T B Jayachandra said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, he said the government would shortly introduce amendments to the rules to facilitate import of sand from countries such as Malaysia and Philippines by the end of this year.

Currently, there are no rules to regulate import of sand from other countries. A Legislative Assembly committee set up to look into the problem of shortage of sand supply has recommended that private players should be allowed to import sand in order to solve the problem, the minister said.

The Mysore Sales International Ltd (MSIL) will act as a nodal agency in this regard. Once the Cabinet gives its approval to the amended rules, permits would be issued for procurement of sand.

Besides, MSIL is also taking steps to import sand in order to ensure adequate supply of sand for the construction activities, he added.

Jayachandra said that one truck load of imported sand would cost between Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000. Efforts to promote use of M-sand (manufacture sand) have been in vain. Only about 60 M-sand manufacturing units have been set up in the last two years. “As there were few takers for M-Sand, especially in the North Karnataka districts, investors were backing off,” he added.

He said the Revenue department has been directed to implement the Karnataka Land Reforms (Amendment) Act that seeks to grant of certificate of ownership to agricultural labourers.

Mangaluru, Aug 3: As part of precautionary measures in the region during Bhoomi Pujan in Ayodhya, prohibitory orders under Section 144 will be imposed under the limits of Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate. 

The Section 144 will be in force from 8 p.m. on Tuesday (August 4) to 6 a.m. on Thursday (August 6)

Sources said that the city police commissioner Vikash Kumar Vikash has taken this step following reports about possibility of protests in Mangaluru during Bhoomi Pujan.  

The top cop has warned of stringent action against those who violate the prohibitory orders.

Belagavi, Mar 7: Karnataka Urban Development Minister B A Basavaraj on Saturday said that government would a take decision very soon regarding conducting city corporations election in the state.

Speaking with the media after review meeting at Belagavi city corporation (BCC) here he further said that delimitation exercise of the wards has to be done followed by reservations.

The minister stated that discussions would be held with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa and would arrive at a decision to conduct the election in about a month’s time.

New Delhi, May 12: Air India is planning to operate 149 repatriation flights to 31 countries between May 16 and May 22 during the second phase of the Vande Bharat mission to bring back home Indians stranded abroad amid the coronavirus-triggered lockdown, officials said. During the first phase of the Vande Bharat mission, Air India and its subsidiary Air India Express are scheduled to operate total 64 flights between May 7 and May 14 to bring approximately 15,000 Indians from 12 countries on a payment basis.

"In the second phase, Air India and Air India Express will operate 149 flights to countries such as the USA, the UAE, Canada, Saudi Arabia, the UK, Malaysia, Oman, Kazakhstan, Australia, Ukraine, Qatar and Indonesia," the airline officials stated.

Other countries to where the national carrier would operate flights between May 16 and May 22 are Russia, Philippines, France, Singapore, Ireland, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait,

Japan, Georgia, Germany and Tajikistan, officials noted.
The flights during the second phase will also be operated to Bahrain, Armenia, Thailand, Italy, Nepal, Belarus, Nigeria and Bangladesh, they mentioned.

India has been under lockdown since March 25 to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, which has infected more than 70,000 people and killed around 2,290 people in the country till now. All scheduled commercial passenger flights have been suspended for the lockdown period.
