Bengaluru, May 7: The BJP in Karnataka took potshots at the Congress-JD(S) coalition government dubbing it as "dead" over its "apathy" towards drought relief measures and warned of state-wide agitations if no action was taken in two to three days.

Alleging that those in the government were immersed in dealing with coalition worries and infighting, the saffron party leaders also hit out at Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy over his temple visits, and not sparing time for drought management.

".. none of the officials or Ministers are paying heed. It looks like there is no one to question them," state BJP chief B S Yeddyurappa told reporters here.

Pointing out that over 170 taluks in the state were facing drought and there was a shortage of drinking water, also fodder for cattle at several places, he said, neither officials nor Ministers are visiting the affected areas, while the Chief Minister doesn't have time.

"... if no action is taken in two to three days it will be inevitable for us (BJP) to hold a statewide agitation. Government is dead, what has happened to officials. They should do their duty by travelling across the state and take measures, also release funds that are required," he added.

Promising that the BJP would work towards getting more assistance from the Centre, the leader of opposition said, without paying attention to any of this, those in the government were immersed in their own "political drama."

"The government was not paying attention towards anything; they are involved in their own confusion, infighting in Congress-JD(S) alliance.

There is a question that has arose whether this government is alive or dead," he said.

Meanwhile, speaking to reporters in Hubballi, former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar said, "it looks like this government is non-existent. It is dead. Let the Chief Minister give his time to drought measures and farmers, instead of spending time visiting temples, performing homa-havana (rituals).

Calling the government "irresponsible", he alleged that the Chief Minister was wasting time pondering over his son's victory in Mandya, his party's performance in the polls, and saving the government.

"Chief Minister spends a lot of time visiting temples and performing rituals there, let him give that time to hold meetings on drought. Elections are over, people have given their verdict, and results won't change if you (CM) go to temples now and perform poojas. With the fear of losing, he (CM) is visiting temples," he added.

Bengaluru, Jul 2: Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said that the "RSS needs to be defeated to save the country" and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are "destroying the nation".

Kharge was speaking at a KPCC program where DK Shivakumar took charge as state Congress president.

He said that the Prime Minister and the Home Minister are not ready to take accountability for any issues including China, and are instead blaming Rajiv Gandhi Foundation of getting funds from China.

"Rajiv Gandhi foundation utilized funds for the development of the nation and for the betterment of the downtrodden people," Kharge said.

"Prime Minister Modi and Shah both are destroying the economy of the nation, and their policies and plans are the reason for increasing COVID-19 situation in India," he said.

"Prime Minister and Amit Shah never listen to Opposition parties, instead they plan something and their policies are the reason for MSME losses and job losses in the country," he added.

Bengaluru, May 18: Over two months after his appointment as the Karnataka Congress President, DK Shivakumar is likely to take-over the reigns of the party officially on May 31.

"There are two dates, May 31 and June 7. He is most likely to officially take over as KPCC President on the 31st," sources close to Mr Shivakumar told PTI.

After remaining in a virtual vacuum for nearly three months, the party high command on March 11 appointed Mr Shivakumar, known to be the Congress' chief troubleshooter in crisis situations, replacing Dinesh Gundu Rao as KPCC chief.

Mr Rao had quit the post in December 2019 after the party's dismal show in the bypolls when it won only two of the 15 seats and yielded 12.

Congress sources said once the appointment letter came from the high command, he has been KPCC president and officially taking charge was just a formality.

"He will be officially handed over the party insignias and responsibilities relating to bank accounts and cheques, among other things, that has been traditionally followed," they said, adding the official take over was delayed by the coronavirus.

After his appointment as KPCC president, Mr Shivakumar has been meeting a host of senior party leaders and leading the party in the fight against coronavirus.

These include setting up of Congress' COVID-19 task force, alerting the government in its management of the crisis, holding weekly video conferencing with leaders of party's local units to gather information, among other things.

Sources close to Mr Shivakumar said the official take over would be a simple event, looking at the current situation due to the pandemic.

"Very few select party leaders and office bearers, say about 50 odd people, are likely to be in attendance at the simple event at KPCC office," they said, adding that arrangements may be made to telecast the event live for the benefit for party workers and local leaders.

A six-time MLA, Mr Shivakumar had a long wait for his appointment to the coveted post, due to opposition within. There were reports that Congress Legislature Party leader Siddarmaiah had lobbied in favour of one of his confidants for the top job.

In a first, appointment of three KPCC Working Presidents- Satish Jharkiholi, Saleem Ahammed and Eashwar Khandre, was seen as an attempt by those apposing Mr Shivakumar, to weaken his hold on the party.

Udupi, Apr 2: The Udupi Administration has given its nod to lift and transport watermelons, pineapples, papaya and Mattu Gulla after growers in the district complained that their produce will go waste and start rotting due to the lockdown on account of COVID-19.

In statement issued here on Thursday, Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesha said that the administration has already held a meeting with wholesale fruit merchants registered with the Agriculture Marketing Produce Committee (APMC).

It has directed these merchants to purchase 35 tonnes of pineapples, 55 tonnes of watermelons and 5,000 bunches of bananas from growers and sell them within the district and also send them to other districts. Such transportation has been exempted from prohibitory orders, he said.
