Karnataka businessman arrested at Airport while trying to flee the country

Bengaluru, Feb 13: A city-based businessman, who has defaulted on income tax payments with arrears of Rs. 11.94 crore plus interest, was on Tuesday detained to a civil prison at Parappana Agrahara Central Jail for six months for failing to make satisfactory arrangement for payment of arrears, officials said.

In a press release, the income tax department said the business was arrested by the Tax Recovery Officer (TRO) on Monday when he was about to leave India from the international Airport in Mumbai.

He was produced before the Tax Recovery Officer-6 in Bengaluru on Tuesday, following which he was committed to civil prison for six months.

"The said income tax defaulter was intercepted at Chhatrapati Shivaji Mumbai International Airport at 2.30 am on Monday. He owed income tax and penalty arrears of Rs. 11.94 crores plus interest," said the I-T Department without divulging the name of the person.

Besides non-payment of due taxes, the defaulter was found to have illegally transferred property situated at Yeshwanthpur.

In the case of income tax evasion, tax recovery officers can attach and sell the movable property of the accused, arrest and detain the person in prison and appoint a receiver to manage the defaulter's business.

However, in this case the sale of immovable property was obstructed by the defaulter.

Defying social distancing norms, residents assemble to buy essentials in parts of Karnataka

Gadag, Mar 28: At a time when the adminsitration is insisting on social diatancing due to COVID-19 outbreak, scores of people gathered in large numbers at an Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) market in Gadag district to buy essential commodities.

Both men and women could be seen standing in large groups near the vendors to buy fruits and vegetables. Some of the customers were also heard bargaining with the sellers in the morning today.

A couple of days back, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised that social distancing is the only way to counter the spread of COVID-19, saying the virus does not discriminate and it can infect anyone.

Interacting with the people of Varanasi through video conferencing, the Prime Minister had stated that some people, despite being empowered with knowledge, are not pay heed to warning which is unfortunate.

He said the 'Mahabharata' war was won in 18 days and the war against coronavirus will take 21 days and the aim is to win it.

According to the Union Health Ministry, there are 873 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in India.

Mangaluru civic body puts ban on street vendors over COVID-19

Mangaluru, Mar 14: In a bid to prevent the coronavirus spread in the city, Mangaluru City Corporation on Saturday disallowed the street vendors to continue their business activities until further notice.

MCC Commissioner Shanady Ajith Kumar Hegde, in an order released today, warned that any vehicles, carts or trolleys that would be seen violating the order will be towed away.

The development comes in the wake of state wide ban on all shopping malls. In Mangaluru too all the malls remained shut today.

Saudi Kannadigas charter flight from Dammam lands in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, June 22: A chartered flight from Dammam with more than 170 stranded Saudi Kannadiga passengers landed at Mangaluru International Airport at 8.53 pm.

The flight was chartered by Saudi Kannadigas Humanity Forum (SKHF), an unregistered NGO, which was formed recently to help the Kannadigas stranded in Saudi Arabia due to covid-19 lockdown under the leadership of Zakariya Jokatte, president of Jubail unit of Bearys Chamber of Commerce and Industry and KS Sheikh Karnire, Director of Expertise Contracting Co. Ltd, Saudi Arabia.

There were 165 adults and 8 infants on board the IndiGo flight. All the passengers were screened at the airport. They will be dispatched to quarantine centres after completing formalities.

SKHF had launched an online portal to assist those who were in need of emergency repatriation such as elderly people, those who lost their jobs, pregnant women and those who are in need of emergency medical treatment back home in India.

SKHF coordinated with the authorities concerned to carry out all the formalities and legal procedures in Saudi Arabia. SKHF members were present at the Dammam Airport to help the passengers during the departure.

Mr Jokatte and Mr Sheikh have thanked U T Khader, Mangaluru MLA and Dr Arathi Krishna, former deputy chairperson of NRI forum of government of Karnataka, for their help in chartering the flight.
