Karnataka delegation meets Modi, seeks Rs 1,199-cr aid; BJP leaders skip

Bengaluru, Sept 10: Led by chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, a high-level delegation from Karnataka today Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought Rs 1,199 crore financial assistance to take up relief programme in flood-hit areas of the state.

The delegation also sought funds to take up relief works in drought-affected areas in some parts of north Karnataka. Former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara, Revenue Minister R V Deshpande and several others were part of the delegation. Interestingly, no BJP leader from the state accompanied the delegation.

"An intimation was sent to the Opposition party leaders in the Assembly and the Council, and MPs from Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, requesting them to accompany the delegation. But none of them attended," Kumaraswamy said speaking to reporters in New Delhi.

Kumaraswamy said the state suffered a loss of Rs 3,705 crore due to the floods and sought Rs 1,199 crore to take up relief works in affected areas, including Kodagu, Shivamogga, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts.

The funds sought to take up relief works includes building houses, roads, bridges, removing silt from agriculture lands and providing water supply to rural areas, he said.

The delegation also urged the Centre to send two teams to assess the loss caused due to crop failure on account of both floods and drought.

As per the central government norms, a total of 86 taluks are facing a drought-like situation due to a dry spell and loss of moisture, the chief minister said.

The prime minister promised to send an expert committee to assess the damage due to drought, he said.

During the meeting, the leaders from the state requested the prime minister to convene a meeting between the state governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to discuss issues concerning the Mekedatu Reservoir Project.

Bengaluru, May 26: Unknown miscreants have set ablaze 30-40 migrant labourers hutments in Bengaluru east, prompting police to take suo motu cognizance, an official said on Tuesday.

"As many as 30-40 migrant labourers' hutments have been set ablaze by unknown miscreants at Kacharakanahallin in KG Halli, we have taken suo motu cognizance of the crime," said a police official to media.

Police are investigating the arson invoking IPC Sections 143, 147, 188, 436, 123, 504, 506 and others.

"There was no loss of life in the arson as the migrant labourers were away at their hometowns because of COVID lockdown," said the official.

The labourers came from different parts of Karnataka to eke out a living and were living in those huts near the Rama Temple in KG Halli.

Bengaluru, May 6: Karnataka has reported 20 new cases of coronavirus taking total number of cases in the state to 693.

The state health department said in a bulletin on Wednesday that 20 new cases have been confirmed for COVID-19 in the state. "The total number of cases in the state is 693," it said.

The count includes 354 patients who have been discharged and 29 patients who succumbed to the disease.

Out of the remaining cases, 303 patients are in isolation at designated hospitals while six patients are in ICU. The bulletin has also reported one death due to non-COVID cause.

The number of COVID-19 cases in the country reached 49,391, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday morning.

This includes 33,514 active cases and 1,694 deaths due to infection so far.

A total of 14,182 persons have been cured and discharged so far, according to the Health Ministry. One patient has migrated.

Mangaluru, May 20: The Third Vande Bharat Mission flight carrying 63 repatriates from Muscat landed at Mangaluru International Airport at 8.35 pm on Wednesday. It was piloted by Mangalurean captain Michael Saldanha.

More than half of the passengers from Muscat alighted in Bengaluru where the flight landed first. Remaining 63 passengers came to Mangaluru. 

After landing, all the passengers were given health kits, food and mobile SIMs, and arrangements were made to change their currency at the airport. 

A health department team screened each passenger, after which emigration formalities were completed. Their throat swab samples will be tested for Covid-19 on Thursday.

Union fertiliser minister D V Sadananda Gowda tweeted on Wednesday that the next Vande Bharat Mission flight is scheduled on Friday from Doha to Mangaluru. The flight will land at Mangaluru at 9.55 pm. 

The third repatriation flight from Dubai to Mangaluru is scheduled on Saturday. It will first land at Bengaluru and later fly to Mangaluru. However, there are no flights from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to Mangaluru.
