Karnataka farmers' protest over water crisis enters 6th day

Bengaluru, Jun 26: The farmers protest in Mandya entered the sixth day on Wednesday. The farmers have been demanding diversion of Cauvery and Hemavati waters to their canals in order to save their produce.

"At this moment we are facing a deficit of water in our reservoirs. We have 75-80 TMC of water in our Cauvery reservoir. It's not possible to release water to them. But we are requesting the government to release water to our standing crops and for our animals. If not we will continue our protest and we are thinking further possibilities," farmers' leader Darshan Puttananiah told ANI.

Farmers in Mandya have been protesting since last five days, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Monday shifted the onus to the Centre and asked it to direct the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) to resolve the issue.

"Supreme Court has also granted permission to the state to release the water at the time of emergency. Now we have 80 TMC of water and we are demanding water for our standing crops and animals. State government should look into this matter and must release water to save the life of animals and farmers in Mandya region," farmers leader Ravi Ganiga told ANI.

Tamil Nadu, which too has been grappling with the scarcity of water, on Thursday demanded that 9.19 TMC feet of water should be released immediately in accordance with the recent decision of the CWMA.

Participating in a meeting of the committee, chaired by its head Naveen Kumar, officials from Tamil Nadu said the Cauvery Water Management Board on May 21 had recommended release of 9.19 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic) feet of water without delay.

Farmers in Maddur, Mandya also held a protest inside the Water Management Board campus, demanding drinking water for irrigation.

Mangaluru, Feb 19: The Plenary Assembly of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) of the Latin Church elected Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore, Karnataka, as the new Chairman of the CCBI Commission for Liturgy.

The Conference also elected 26 Bishops of the CCBI to participate in the three-week Golden Jubilee Conference of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC) to be held in November 2020 at Bangkok in Thailand. The one day meeting of the CCBI discussed various matters affecting the Latin Catholic Church in India, which consists of 132 dioceses and 190 Bishops.

The CCBI animates the Church in India through its 16 Commissions and 4 Departments. Its main Secretariat is in Bangalore with extensions in Goa, Delhi and Pachmarhi (MP).

The Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) which is the Canonical National Episcopal Conference is the largest in Asia and the fourth largest in the world.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 3: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday wrote letters to 11 Chief Ministers including Arvind Kejriwal--Delhi and Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal-- pointing out apprehensions that had arisen among large sections of society consequent to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) - 2019.

In his letter, the Chief Minister said "the need of the hour is unity among all Indians who wish to protect and preserve our cherished values of democracy and secularism."

People from various cross-sections of the society irrespective of any difference they might have, need to stand united in preserving the basic tenets of our polity which form the cornerstone of Indian democracy, he added.

"We are sure that our unity in diversity, which has stood the test of times will ultimately emerge stronger. Kerala has decided to address the apprehensions about NRC and that preparation of NPR will lead to NRC by staying all activities relating to NPR in the State," Mr Vijayan said.

In this regard, the Kerala Legislative Assembly had passed the resolution on December 31, 2019, expressing its concern regarding the impact the CAA will have on the nation's secular credentials, he said.

"The resolution requested the Central Government to repeal the CAA, 2019. States, which have the opinion that CAA should be repealed can also consider similar steps so that it will be an eye-opener to the proponents of the CAA and the NRC," the Chief Minister pointed out.

Chikkamagaluru, Jul 22: Nine staff of the Anti Naxal Force (ANF) in Koppa in the district were tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday.

Health officials said that these people don’t have any contacts outside as they were in the forest buffer zone. Now efforts were being made to find out how they contacted the Coronavirus.

Meanwhile, the Kalsa police station has been sealed down after four of its personnel tested positive.
