The formers in Karnataka have decided to picket Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he visits Bengaluru on February 4 to attend a public rally organised by the BJP at Palace Grounds.
A decision to this effect was taken on Monday at a farmers' meeting in Hubballi. Farmers of the four districts of Mumbai-Karnataka have been demanding immediate solution of Mahadayi water dispute.
They have also been demanding prime minister's intervention for the early solution to the problem. However, the PM has refused to intervene in the issue so far.
Recently, a federation of Kannada organisations had decided to hold a huge protest in Bengaluru during Modi’s visit seeking his intervention in resolving the Mahadayi row. Federation president Vatal Nagaraj recently had said that a large number of farmers from north Karnataka would take part.
However, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that his government would not Modi’s event in Bengaluru. “Our party is not so petty minded as to obstruct the Prime Minister's function. Politically, we need to respect even the opposition's voice. But we will not respect the lies told by them,” he asserted, clearly referring to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s allegation that the recent bandh over the Mahadayi dispute was stage sponsored by the Congress government to steal the thunder from its party president, Amit Shah’s visit to Karnataka.
