Karnataka generating excess power, but unable to use it: top official

Bengaluru, Feb 10: P Ravi Kumar, Principal Secretary, Energy Department, on Friday said that there is excess generation of power from various sources, including solar energy, in the state. However, the state is unable to use the generated power effectively for want of proper infrastructure.

He said that on Friday the maximum demand was 9,150 MW and on Thursday it was 9,755 MW. The department can meet the demand even up 11,000 MW. But, this is not happening in the absence necessary infrastrure, he said.

He was speaking on the sidelines of the launch of "Karnataka State Report- Greening the Grid: Pathways to Integrate 175 Gigawatts of Renewable Energy into India's Electric Grid- Volume 2," organised by Renewable Integration and Sustainable Energy Initiative. The report was prepared by United States Agency International Development (USAID) and Ministry of Power.

The national target of solar power generation for the year 2022 is 6000 MW. By June 2018, Karnataka will be reaching this target. Through captive generation and open access 4,000 MW is being generated.

"We are unable to use our hydro resources. By June, the water levels will increase and it will be surplus. This will become a problem to us. There is now a need for a policy decision on how to manage the power and the grids. There is a need to ascertain how much load the grids can take," he said.

Kumar said that as per the new energy policy, power generation from coal has to be reduced by 55%. To do this, renewable energy needs to be enhanced. The grid and transmission lines need to be maintained in such a manner that power will be supplied for only eight hours a day. There is a lot of cost factors involved, for which a proper long-term policy is needed.

He said that there is a huge financial impact due to excessive generation and there is a need for a regulatory model on how to manage renewable energy, cut down on thermal storage and generation and how a balance should be maintained.

Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) is now discussing on plans on how renewable energy needs to be managed and generated, said H D Aurn Kumar, member, KERC.

Bengaluru, Mar 30: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Sunday convened an all-party meeting and apprised the Opposition leaders about the measures taken by the government to contain the coronavirus in the state.

"I have been regularly holding meeting since March 13 regarding the measures taken to contain the transmission of COVID-19," the chief minister said at the meeting at the Vidhana Soudha.

Health Minister B Sriramulu, Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar, IT-BT Minister C N Aswath Narayan, Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi, former chief minister and Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah, Opposition MLAs H D Revanna, D K Shivakumar and former speaker K R Ramesh Kumar attended the meeting.

The chief minister said a task force comprising ministers and officials has been formed to oversee the implementation of the government orders.

Yediyurappa highlighted the prevailing situation across the globe saying that normal life had been paralysed everywhere.

The chief minister also apprised them about the number of clinics all over the state, availability of medicines and protection gear for the doctors and quarantine rooms in the state.

Kundapur, Apr 28: The local police have arrested two people for threatening and preventing an Associated Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers from discharging their duties during the lockdown.

Police said on Tuesday that the arrested are Sandeep Mesta and Mahesh Kharvi.

According to official sources, the health officials had put Sandeep under quarantine for 28 days.

However, he was seen wandering in the streets and ASHA worker C Laxmi warned him to stay indoors.

Irked by the warning Sandeep, along with his friend Mahesh Kharvi waylaid her and threatened to kill for objecting his movement.

Bengaluru, Jun 5: With the easing of COVID-19 lockdown norms under unlock 1.0, the Karnataka government on Thursday permitted state transport buses to operate even during the night curfew hours 9 pm to5 am.

Autos, taxis and cabs have also been given permission to operate during these hours for picking commuting passengers from pickup points or bus stands.

Chief Secretary T M Vijay Bhaskar in an order said, state transport corporations (BMTC, KSRTC, NEKRTC and NWKRTC) buses have been allowed to operate during night curfew hours from 9 pm to 5 am.

On the basis of their bus tickets, passengers would be allowed to commute to bus stand or from there to home, in accordance with the COVID-19 control measures, SOPs and other guidelines, it said.

Further, during the curfew hours autos, taxis and cabs have been given permission to pick commuters from pickup points or bus stands, it added.

Earlier, the government had revised the night curfew time from the previous 7 pm-7 am to 9 pm-5 am, and said the movement of individuals shall remain strictly prohibited between 9 pm and 5 am throughout the state, except for essential activities.

The government has also said that jungle lodges and resorts, also private organisations providing similar facilities, along with activities they provide like safari, trekking among others would be permitted from June 8, in compliance with the guidelines and SOP issued and following the social distancing norms.
