Karnataka governor accused of misusing power

Puducherry, Jul 20: Senior Congress leader and Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy Saturday charged the Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala with misusing powers and authority in the current political development in the state.

Addressing reporters here, Narayanasamy said the Governor without any justification was intervening in the authority and powers of the Karnataka Chief Minister.

Also, Narayanasamy hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly causing disturbance in the states where the Congress was in power.

He said there were already allegations of money power and political power being used by the BJP in Karnataka to lure the legislators of the coalition government in the state.

He said there were also complaints of horse-trading to destabilise the JDS-Congress coalition government in Karnataka.

The territorial chief Minister took strong exception to the provisions of the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill proposing a common final year MBBS examinationcalled NEXT (National Exist Test) for admission to postgraduate medical courses.

"This provision is a clear encroachment upon the rights and pre-rogatives of the state and strikes at the root of the federalism," he said.

He said the Puducherry government was opposed to NEXT and detailed letters were being shot off to the Prime Minister, Union Health and HRD Ministers registering the Union Territory`s protest against the National Medical Commission and also the provisions of NEXT.

Narayanasamy said through NEET the Centre was dashing the dreams of several students in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to become doctors.

He suspected the Centre of trying to bring education under Central list by delinking it from the concurrent list.

The special session of the Puducherry Assembly slated for July 22 would discuss these issues enlisting the views of the legislators.

Bengaluru, Jul 18: Bringing a major change in the  administration of Bengaluru, which has emerged as a Covid-19 hotspot, the state government on Saturday transferred B H Anil Kumar out of the BBMP and brought N Manjunath Prasad to take his place. 

Manjunath Prasad, who headed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) before being replaced by Kumar, will take over with immediate effect. The government has also placed him in concurrent charge of the Revenue Department as well as the Disaster Management, Bhoomi and UPOR.

Kumar, an Additional Chief Secretary, has been put in a place where earlier a secretary was posted. He now heads the Department of Public Enterprises. The posting would have brought him two spots down had it not been for the government upgrading it to the level of additional chief secretary. 

Anil Kumar, who was earlier praised for his work to contain the coronavirus pandemic, had faced criticism by the High Court of Karnataka for the BBMP's failure to help people in containment zones as well as other issues on the spread of the pandemic. 

Sources in the government said, pressure has been building up against Anil Kumar over the last two months after most of the Bengaluru MLAs complained to the chief minister's office.

"No MLA backed him. Everyone had a problem," a source said. 

Things came to the head with regard to a Rs 436 crore project given to KRIDL. "The issue reached the chief minister's office as all the MLAs took an issue with the way the project was awarded," a source said. 

Another source said that Kumar came under fire after a central team flagged the issue of failing Covid-19 surveillance measures in Bengaluru. The central team's criticism, it is widely believed in the government, came as the last straw.

Bengaluru, Aug 8: Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Saturday demanded that the state government drop its plan to provide doorstep delivery of liquor.

"After faltering in mopping up revenue, the state government is mulling over allowing doorstep delivery of liquor by enabling online sales and starting new MSIL liquor shops in rural areas. I demand that the state government drop its plans," he tweeted.

"I came to know that the excise commissioner is keen to hold talks with a private firm to enable online sale of liquor. The government should back out from such a foolish decision. Otherwise, agitation is inevitable," Kumaraswamy said.

He said opening new liquor shops or online delivery will ruin the health of society.

"Post-COVID outbreak and subsequent lockdown, people are facing financial distress, struggling to lead day-to-day life. 

The government must withdraw such an imprudent decision to deliver liquor at doorsteps. Opening new liquor shops or the decision of online delivery in times of distress like this will spoil society's health. 

It is not fair for the government to fill its coffers by robbing people's money," he said in a series of tweets.

Mangaluru, Jul 3: A middle aged man killed his wife by pushing her down a stone quarry at Karambaru near Kavoor on the outskirts of the city today.

The victim has been identified as Shanta, aged around 35 years. The accused is her husband Ganesh, aged round 45 years.

The incident took place on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. The exact reason for the crime is yet to be known. It is learnt that the husband and wife had quarreled before the murder.

A native of Hassan, Ganesh was working as a tipper driver. Shanta hailed from Salethadka in Kasargod. They couple have a son and a daughter. The family stays in a rented house at Kavoor.
