Karnataka govt approves distribution of laptops worth about Rs 17 cr for SC trainees of ITIs

Bengaluru, Dec 13: The Karnataka cabinet on Thursday gave administrative approval for procurement and distribution of laptops free of cost to Schedule Caste trainees (Final Year) of government aided and private ITI's for 2019-20, at an outlay of about Rs 17 crores.

"5,331 laptops will be procured at an estimated cost of Rs 16.98 crores," Law and Parliamentary Affairs MInister J C Madhuswamy said after the cabinet meeting.

The cabinet also gave approval for construction of tourist plaza at Pattadakallu, UNESCO World Heritage site in Bagalkote district at estimated cost of Rs 29.25 crore for tourism development.

"The plaza will come up over an area of 24 acres on the banks of river Malaprabha.

It is aimed at creating infrastructure facilities with an intention of making Pattadakallu tourism spot of global standards," the Minister said.

It would include restaurant, open air theater, amphitheater, toilets, stalls, information and conference centres, landscaping, digital interpretation centre among others under one roof.

Among other decisions taken at the meeting include, constitution of cabinet sub committee to make suitable recommendations to amend the Bangalore Development Authority Act, aimed at regularising, irregular or unauthorised constructions in BDA layouts.

Ratification of the action taken for orders issued on November 7, giving administrative approval to the DPR for construction of Chikkaballapura medical college at a cost of Rs 525 crore was also among the other decisions taken on Thursday.

The cabinet has also approved provision of government guarantee for Rs 1,550 crore to Karnataka State Cooperative Agriculture and Rural Development (KSCARD) Bank limited for availing NABARD refinance during the year 2019-20.

The Minister said, cabinet has asked the irrigation department to look into a proposal by a private trust to rejuvenate Dakshina Pinakini river at the cost ofRs 2600 crore in a phased manner, with the help of various philanthropic, CSR funds, and banks.

Hassan, Mar 14: Karnataka Health Department officials took help of the Police to get a man, who returned from pilgrimage to Mecca (Saudi Arabia), admitted to hospital as he refused to undergo clinical tests for suspected Coronavirus, official sources said on Saturday.

According to the sources, a family from Arkalgud taluk, who was on a pilgrimage to Mecca and Madina, returned on March 5 and the woman from the family developed fever and symptoms of flu.

On Friday evening, in view of the Coronavirus scare, a team of Health Department officials visited their house and directed them to get admitted to a hospital in Hassan for treatment.

Bengaluru, Jun 18: The Karnataka police has arrested a German national wanted for kidnapping and causing bodily harm to a person in his home country, an official said on Wednesday. The person was also found to be overstaying on an expired visa, which police said that it appeared that the visa had been tampered with to look more current.

"On receipt of credible information by the CID Interpol Division officers, the Red Corner Notice subject, the German national Alexander Bruno Wehnelt, was traced at Hulimangala village," a police official told media persons.

Hulimangala is on the outskirts of Bengaluru city.

Alexander, 55, escaped from Germany and took shelter in Bengaluru.

The Interpol Division of CBI NCB (Central Bureau of Intelligence, Narcotics Control Bureau) in New Delhi had communicated to the Interpol liaison officer in Karnataka's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) about Alexander, directing extensive search measures to trace the criminal at large.

The Narcotics Control Bureau of Wiesbaden in Germany was on the hunt for Wehnelt for the crimes he committed in 2015, and have finally found him five years later.

"A special team of officers was constituted by the CID - Interpol division under the supervision of ADGP (Additional Director General of Police) B. Dayananda and the Interpol liaison officer and efforts were made to trace the subject," said the official.

On Monday, the police received credible information leading to his arrest.

"It was learnt that his visa had expired in 2016 and he tried to show a visa which was issued in December 2019 which had expired on Saturday, June 13," said the official.

Prima facie, it appeared that Alexander had tampered with his visa and the police are probing on that front as well.

He was handed over to Hebbagodi Police Station in Bengaluru Urban, for his overstay and a criminal case has been registered against him, under the Foreigners Act.

Mangaluru, May 31: Eminent social worker, former Principal of School of Social Work Dr Olinda Pereira, passed away on Sunday.

She was 95.

Mahatma Gandhi Peace awardee Pereira promoted Women’s Education and Development in several States. She has left an indelible mark in the state of Karnataka, India and overseas.

Dr Olinda Pereira publications include: Understanding Children – 1,2,3, Sallak Publications – 1974; Adjustment and its Correlates among Pre-adolescents – Preeti Publications – 1977; Domestic Workers Struggle For Life-A.T.C Publications – 1985.
