Karnataka Govt firm on Tipu Jayanti despite intelligence warning

October 29, 2016

Bengaluru, Oct 29: The Kannada and Culture department on Friday decided to go ahead with the Tipu Jayanti celebrations on November 10. The state-level celebrations will be organised in Bengaluru.

tipuThis was decided at a meeting convened by Kannada and Culture Minister Umashree in Bengaluru.

According to official sources, the meeting was convened after the state intelligence wing reportedly advised the government not to organise the Jayanti, especially after the incidents of violence witnessed in Kodagu last year.

Two persons, including a member of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, had died in the clashes between two groups.

However, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is supposed to have instructed officials to go ahead with the Jayanti celebrations. Also, unlike last year, this year, the Kannada and Culture department has been vested with the responsibility of organising the event. Last year, the Directorate of Minorities had organised the celebration.

To invite Hindu seers

Umashree had convened the meeting, which was attended by Ministers Tanveer Sait and Roshan Baig as well as the heads of the Wakf Board and Urdu Academy.

At the meeting, it was resolved to invite Hindu religious leaders, including seers Veerabhadra Channamalla of Nidumamidi Mutt, Sri Bharati Teertha of Sringeri Shankar Mutt and Vishwesha Teertha of Pejawar Mutt, in a bid to showcase that the Jayanti is not a “religious” event.

When contacted, Baig said that there were no reports from the intelligence wing. He said that the Nidumamidi Mutt seer would be the speaker, and efforts were on to contact other seers.

He argued that Tipu Jayanti is not a religious celebration. “We are keen that the Sringeri Mutt swami participates because till date the Mutt has carried on with the tradition ofSultan Aarti'. Tipu had helped restore the temple at Sringeri after it was plundered by the Marathas. He had even donated money and jewels to the temple,” Baig added.

RSS?to back protests against event

The RSS will oppose the government's plan to celebrate Tipu Jayanti and will support protests planned by members of the Sangha Parivar.

Addressing reporters, RSS?Kshetriya Sanchalak V?Nagaraj said Tipu was “intolerant and a bigot”. “He was an intolerant king. He killed innocent Kodavas. Several historians including Kirmani and Mutthanna have chronicled Tipu's religious hatred and bigotry,” he said, reports DHNS from Bengaluru .

Nagaraj said there was no demand from the Muslim community for holding Tipu Jayanti. “It is obvious that the government is organising Tipu Jayanti on November 10 with political interest in mind.”

The RSS has not organised any protest to oppose Tipu Jayanti. The RSS?will support protest rallies planned by various organisations in Chitradurga and Bengaluru on November 2 and 8 respectively, he said.

Roshan baig, Minister: We are keen that the Sringeri Mutt swami participates because till date the Mutt has carried on with the tradition ofSultan Aarti'. Tipu had helped restore the temple at Sringeri after it was plundered by the Marathas. He had even donated money and jewels to the temple.

Why and how to celebrate Jayanti.

In Islam, there is no such thing to celebrate birthday.
However there is no harm in remembering someone who was helpful.
I can suggest, don't spend for any statue, don't irrect any statue.
If you have such money, spend it for poor people, poor children. Islam does not sanction any wastage. Spend money for useful purpose, in the memory of such brave people.
In Gujrat state Mody spent huge money for Sardar Patel's statue, Marathis did the same in Maharashtra for Shivaji. The amount spent is 1000 of crore rupees.

Despite of difference of opinions of Tippu's attitude, it is true,

- He was brave, he is the first king to fight against British, he fought 4times. He participated in all wars. Not only that He became martyre in the war like a soldier.

- How many such kings have spent their life in this country or in other parts of this world.
- He Proved If we start resisting our enemy boldly, courageously, one day we can win.

- Therefore the spirit to fight against the British is his inspiration.

- Anyway we have so much approval from so many seers, swamees who admit Tippu was TOLERANT, All his ministers were Hindus.

Alappuzha, Jan 9: The houseboat of Nobel Laureate Michael Levitt was blocked in the backwaters here for some time by trade union activists, who were on a nationwide strike against the Centre's "anti-labour" policies on Wednesday.

Michael Levitt, an American-British-Israeli biophysicist and a professor of structural biology at the Stanford University in the United States, said the incident sent a bad message to tourists.

Levitt, who was in Kerala as a state guest, also said he felt as if a bandit had stopped his wife and him at gunpoint. Police said Levitt, who received the 2013 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was in Alappuzha with his wife and they were stopped by the protesters near Kainakary.

"Being stopped by criminals on the backwaters sends a very bad message to tourists. It is as if a bandit stopped us at gunpoint and delayed us under the threat of force for one hour," Levitt wrote in an email to his tour agent at Kottayam.

In the email, which was later released to the media, he also said the person who blocked them "ignored all arguments that tourists were exempted" from the strike.

"This person, who did this, ignored all arguments that tourists were exempted and that I am a VIP guest of the Kerala government. He was obviously acting, knowing that he was safe from prosecution. Sadly, this makes me fear that India is sinking into lawlessness," Levitt wrote in the email.

The police registered a case after the houseboat owners filed a complaint in this regard.

Reacting to the incident, state Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran said the government would take strong action. "Strong action will be taken against those anti-social elements who stopped the boat. Levitt was here as a guest of the state government. The government had made it clear that the tourism industry was exempted from the strike," he said.

Trade union leaders had also announced that the strike would not affect the tourism industry.

Ten trade unions, including the INTUC, the AITUC and the CITU, had called for the nationwide strike to protest against the labour reforms, FDI, disinvestment, corporatisation and privatisation policies of the Centre and press for a 12-point demands of the working class, relating to minimum wage, among others.

Bengaluru, Jan 13: Though he submitted his resignation as leader of the opposition over a month ago, former chief minister Siddaramaiah continues as the face of the Congress in Karnataka.

However, this may change as All India Congress Committee (AICC) interim president Sonia Gandhi has summoned Siddaramaiah to Delhi for a final consultation over change of guard. Over the past month, there has been speculation over the possibility of Congress persisting with Siddaramaiah as opposition leader and either party troubleshooter DK Shivakumar or former ministers MB Patil, HK Patil or Eshwar Khandre replacing incumbent president Dinesh Gundu Rao. Both tendered resignations owing moral responsibility for the party's dismal performance in the 15 bypolls held last month.

In the past 24 hours, there has been talk of Siddaramaiah being asked to be the state unit president and vacating the other post for a young turk or experience legislator including the likes of Shivakumar who could be the face of KPCC by 2023 if he gets a clean chit from the ED in cases of money-laundering, etc. Seniors, including former KPCC president and DyCM G Parameswara and former minister HK Patil, are strong contenders to be leader of the opposition if Siddaramaiah is asked to vacate the post.

However, sources in the Siddaramaiah camp dismissed the possibility of him becoming KPCC president. "He has never aspired for the post and the high command is not inclined to do it," said a member in his camp.

Siddaramaiah may meet Sonia on Tuesday morning. It's still unclear if any other KPCC functionaries have been summoned. Sources said Sonia is scheduled to leave India for medical treatment on January 15 and wanted to complete the consultations about Karnataka. The high command has reportedly gone through reports submitted by party observers Madhusudan Mistry and Parameswara.

Bengaluru, Jul 19: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa convened a meeting with Private Medical College Hospitals on Saturday to assess COVID-19 management and directed them to provide 50 per cent of the beds, as promised, with effect from Sunday.

The chief minister said that private medical college hospitals need to cooperate as there is a sharp rise in COVID-10 cases in the city. He further said that it has come to the notice of the government that some institutes are denying treatment of COVID-19 as well as non-COVID patients.

The chief minister expressed his concerns over media reports stating several people died as they didn't get timely treatment due to denial from the hospitals. He said that Bengaluru should continue to lead the country as a role model in COVID-19 management.

During previous meetings, private medical colleges had agreed upon providing around 4,500 beds, which would make the total beds available in government and private medical colleges 6,500.

The chief minister expressed dismay over some colleges not providing the number of beds as promised and also about certain lacunae which were noticed by ministers during their visit.
During this emergency situation, we should show humanity. COVID and non-COVID patients shall not be denied treatment and the balance in healthcare system shall be maintained, he advised.

He assured them of all support, including providing doctors and nurses if need be.
The private medical colleges had assured to provide 50 per cent of beds and some colleges offered 80 per cent of the beds for COVID treatment.

Nodal officers have already been appointed to monitor the availability of beds in these medical colleges.

It was decided to issue a notice to Vaidehi Medical College for their absence in the meeting.
