Bengaluru, Dec 24: In the wake of brutal rape and murder of a minor girl belonging to Dalit community by a gang of Hindutva activists in Vijayapura, the Karnataka government is considering to introduce a bill proposing capital punishment for those who sexually assault minors.
Home minister Ramalinga Reddy has reportedly asked the home department to study a Madhya Pradesh bill that proposes death penalty for sexual offenders attacking minors especially those below 12 years.
“I have asked officials in the home department to study the bill introduced in Madhya Pradesh. I'll discuss it with the CM to introduce a similar bill here," Reddy told media persons here.
Experts, however, argue that while it is easy to make a law to award death penalty, the utility of such a law is a moot question. Child Rights Trust director Nagasimha G Rao said: "Stringent punishment of any sort for adults committing such crimes is welcome. However, one must debate whether the death penalty is really the way forward, even in such cases. When several countries in the world are doing away with such punishment, we need to discuss it at length and not act just based on emotion."
