Karnataka has 2.1 cr vehicles; Bengaluru alone choked with over 80 lakh

Bengaluru, Apr 2: In an alarming indication that more number of people are switching from public transport to private commute, Karnataka’s vehicular population has now touched 2.1 crores.

Around 1,750 new vehicles are getting registered in Bengaluru city alone every day and the vehicle population in the capital of the state has crossed 80.45 lakh, said Transport Commissioner V.P. Ikkeri.

During a briefing on the performance of the department in the just concluded financial year 2018-19, Mr. Ikkeri said in the previous financial year, as of March 2018, the number of vehicles registered was 74.06 lakh.

As per the existing provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, it is not possible to restrict new registration of vehicles. However, in the interest of the environment, registration of e-vehicles is being promoted, he said.

Across the State, the total number of vehicles registered went up to 2.1 crore as against 1.93 crore in the previous financial year.

The Transport Department has managed to reach the revenue target fixed by the State government.

The department generated revenue of Rs. 6,168.58 crore against a target of Rs. 6,167.61 crore due to increased registration of new vehicles.

However, revenue from State-run road transport corporations, like KSRTC and BMTC, fell short of the target.

The department is expecting revenue of Rs. 359.48 crore against a target of Rs. 488.81crore. The department had imposed penalties amounting to Rs. 160 crore for various offences.

Implementation of HSRP

The transport commissioner said that the Union government has issued notifications for implementation of rules on high security registration plates (HSRP) for vehicles manufactured from April 1, and it is the responsibility of manufactures to provide high security registration plates.

Officials maintained that the rules do not apply for vehicles that are registered.

“It is a discretionary power of the State government to introduce the rule to already registered vehicles, but as of now the matter is before a court of law,” Mr. Ikkeri said.

He added that after March 2020, vehicles with two-stroke engines will be banned. Vehicle owners must shift to four-stroke engines prior to the deadline.

Leopard drags 5-yr-old boy into forest, kills him

Tumkur, Jan 10: A five-year-old boy has been killed by a leopard in Gubi taluk of Tumkuru district in Karnataka.

The local police said today that the incident took place on Thursday evening when the boy was returning home along with his grandmother.

The leopard first attacked a cow and then the boy who was behind it. The feline dragged the body into the forest.

After a search operation by the forest officials, the body was found and handed over to the parents after post-mortem.

Karnataka: Covid-19 death toll increases to 30; total cases cross 700-mark

Bengaluru, May 7: A 55-year old woman from Davanagere became the 30th COVID-19 related fatality in Karnataka, where a total number of infections has crossed 700-mark, with eight new positive cases being confirmed, the health department said on Thursday.

The deceased woman was a known case of diabetes and hypertension, she was admitted with a complaint of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and was on a ventilator, the department said in its mid-day situation update.

She died today at a designated hospital in Davanagere, it said.

"Eight new positive cases have been reported from last evening to this noon...

Till date 701 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed. This includes 30 deaths and 363 discharges," the update said.

The eight new cases reported include three from Davangere, indulging the deceased patient; also three from Kalaburagi, and one each from Hirebagewadi in Belagavi district and Bengaluru urban.

While four cases are contacts of patients earlier tested positive, three are with the history of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and one is a SARI case.

Five among eight new cases are women and three are men.

Mangaluru: ‘Ride for Rotary’ flagged off; Rotarians from 14 countries take part

Mangaluru, Jan 19: ‘Ride For Rotary’ convoy of motor vehicles was flagged off from Hotel Ocean Pearl Inn at Bejai-Kapikad, Mangaluru on Sunday, 19th January, 2020 at 9.00 a.m. Rotary district governor Joseph Mathew flagged off the event along with Assistant Governors Sumith S. Rao, Geethanand Pai and Ritesh Baliga. The riders headed for Puttur after topping up their fuel tanks at Lady Hill Petrol Pump.

2019-20 Ride For Rotary includes 28 motorbikes and 5 cars. 38 Rotarians from 14 countries are participating, in this, the fourth edition of the event. They will traverse through Madikeri, Mysore, Wayanad, Ooty, Coimbatore, Munnar, Thekkady and Allepey before terminating at Kochi on 29th of January, 2020. The participating nationalities are India, Norway, Sweden, Canada, France, Germany, USA, UK, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Poland and Belgium. They belong to ages 21 to 78, with 78-year old Otto Rieve from Canada being the senior most enthusiast. Swiss national of Indian origin Raj Patholi and Mangalorean Abraham Zacharias are among the riders.

Mangalore was chosen as the starting point for the convoy route this year which will cover Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. On the eve of the event, the organizers hosted a gala dinner for the riders at Citi Beech, Bolar. The riders were given a glimpse of the traditional dance forms and were treated to some wonderful songs in Tulu and Kannada along with local coastal cuisine.

They were also given a glimpse of the major service projects undertaken in our district by Rotary, such as the Rotary Blood Bank on Wheels, the Physiotherapy Clinic at Wenlock Hospital, the Schools adopted by Rotary and the Ashrams and Villages that are being served by Rotary. The idea behind this is to see that riders carry these memories and think of helping Rotarians in India through their matching contributions for future service projects.

Ride for Rotary is a charity event conceived by Rotary District 3181 which comprises of the revenue districts of Mysore, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and Chamarajanagar covering 85 Rotary Clubs in 9 zones. They will traverse through the meticulously arranged routes, enjoy the natural beauty of the places and experience the varied cultures and cuisines of the region.
