Karnataka high court asks Air India to pay Rs 20-lakh relief to physically challenged doctor

Bengaluru, Nov 4: The Karnataka high court directed Air India to pay Rs 20 lakh as compensation to a physically challenged doctor and her mother for a missing wheelchair at London airport, which not only caused inconvenience but also caused mental agony to them during their Europe tour in July 2016.

Partly allowing a petition filed by Dr SJ Rajalakshmi and her 63-year-old mother Dr S Shobha, Justice B Veerappa observed that Air India's conduct violated the fundamental rights of petitioners apart from the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full participation) Act and it needs to compensated.

As per the order, the mother and daughter have to be paid Rs 10 lakh each.

The judge also directed deputy commissioner, Bengaluru South to take appropriate action against Girinagar police for not registering the complaint filed by the petitioners in accordance with the provisions of Criminal Procedure Code.

Both had approached the court seeking for refund of ticket charges and for re-arranging their Europe tour. Claiming that they had to suffer loss of income during the six-week period, they had sought compensation of Rs 33.3 lakh. According to them, the missing wheelchair, inconvenience and poor itinerary abruptly ended their tour.

Rajalakshmi claimed that on July 18, 2016 her wheelchair, checked in at Bengaluru airport, did not arrive at London and she was not provided the facility. They claimed they missed the Scotland train on arrival and the Scotland Airway flight the next day and reached only at midnight and could not visit may tourist places.

They contended that due to poor itinerary and food, they had serious health problems and were forced to abruptly return home on July 27, 2016 and were admitted to Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, Bengaluru.

The petitioners sought the court's direction to Air India and the private travel agent to pay them Rs 15 lakh towards loss of medical practice during the six-month period owing to hospitalisation and also refund of Rs 5.7 lakh paid towards air ticket charges.

Shivamogga, Aug 5: Karnataka Minister KS Eshwarappa on Wednesday hailed the laying of foundation stone (bhoomi pujan) for a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya and said "Kashi Vishwanath and "Krishna Janmasthan temples have to be liberated".

"It is a good day that the foundation stone for Ram Temple has been laid. A beautiful temple will come up, but there are Kashi Vishwanath and Krishna Janmasthan temples which have to be liberated," Eshwarappa said.

The minister said that there is a "sign of slavery" at Krishna temple in Mathura and Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi.

"The whole nation is dreaming of Shri Krishna temple in Mathura and Kashi Vishwanath temple. I have visited the two temples. 

There is a sign of slavery. Mosques are there at holy places. When I visited the place at Mathura, I witnessed the wall. When we look at the wall, we feel like we are still slaves," he said.

"While visiting Kashi, there is also a structure of slavery. Dream of Hindus is fulfilled in Ayodhya. One day, it will be fulfilled in Mathura and Kashi. Mathura Sri Krishna and Kashi Vishwanath will be freed and temple will be built," Eshwarappa added.

The Places of Worship Act, enacted in 1991, says that religious character of a place of worship existing on the August 15, 1947 shall continue to be the same as it existed on that day. The Act kept Ayodhya case out of its purview.

Bengaluru, Feb 20: The poultry industry is facing losses amid rumours of the discovery of a chicken infected with coronavirus in Bengaluru.

DK Kantharaju, president, Karnataka Cooperative Poultry Federation said, "Karnataka is facing losses of Rs 60 to 65 crores. The consumption percentage has also decreased by 30-35 per cent".

Atiq, a meat seller, said, "Because of coronavirus people are scared. But I want to say that chicken is safe to consume here. All this fear is caused due to fake news on social media."

Another person Abdul Hafeez said, "Chicken and coronavirus are not related. People are scared because of what is being spread on social media. The business has definitely gone down due to fear of coronavirus."

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 14: Amid Covid-19 lockdown,

Keralites celebrated a low key "Vishu" ,the Malayalam new year, on Tuesday, hoping that days of plenty, prosperity and peace will return.

People woke up in the early hours to see the auspicious "Vishu kani", symbolising hope, promise and fine prospects they wish to have in the year ahead.

The ritual comprises arranging on platters auspicious articles like seasonal fruits, vegetables, flower, gold and clothes which together form the first sight when the family members wake up on the Vishu day.

Normally, Keralites dressed in their traditional attire throng temples across the state.

However, this year due to the lockdown restrictions, temple visits were given a go by.

The famed Sri Krishna temple at Guruvayur and the Lord Ayyappa shrine at Sabarimala witnesses heavy rush of devotees during the vishu day.

But pilgrims were not allowed inside and only temple officials and security personnel were present for the"Vishu kani".

Rehaman, a small time trader, said very few people have come out for vishu purchases due to the restricitons.

It is fine as it is for a good cause, while Radha, a young woman said she could not celebrate the festival.

"We have no money, no job. With whatever little we have, we are celebrating the festival", she said.

87-year-old Vilasini Nambiar, a retired college professor, said vishu has visited the state during a most bewildering time.

"It should however remind us that every mountain must have its valley, desert its oasis, every storm cloud its rainbow, every night its day.

We are prepared to believe that we will overcome this misfortune", she said.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, Home minister, Amit Shah, Kerala Governor, Arif Mohammed Khan and Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, were among those who greeted people on the occasion of Vishu.
