Bengaluru, Aug 9: Floods and heavy rain in several parts of Karnataka over the past four days have damaged 1.5 lakh hectares of crops, according to a preliminary assessment by the government.

The monsoon fury has also damaged around 1,400km of roads, 211 bridges and more than 2,500 electricity poles and transformers, officials from the state revenue department said.

Belagavi sustained the most damage (70%) to crops and infrastructure among the flood-hit north Karnataka districts, which also include Bagalkot, Vijayapura, Raichur and Yadgir, the officials said.

“A final assessment can be made only after floodwaters recede,” said Lalitha Handigod, revenue deputy secretary, disaster management. “What we now have is only a preliminary assessment. We are focused on rescue operations.” The agriculture department presented a grimmer picture, saying close to 2 lakh hectares of standing crops are under water. “If the water recedes in a day or two, some of the crops may not be affected,” agriculture director BY Srinivas said. “We’ll soon have a more accurate estimate.”

According to the agriculture department officials, flooding has severely affected crops in eleven districts including Shivamogga, Hassan, Uttara Kannada, Haveri, Gadag, and Kalaburagi. Apart from standing crops like sugarcane and paddy in Belagavi, Vijayapura and other districts, rain has also damaged short-duration crops such as vegetables and horticulture crops like areca and coconut.

Sowing has been completed on 22.6 hectares of a cumulative target area of 31.2 hectares in these districts. “People were worried about drought till last month,” said Chamarasa Malipatil, honorary president, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha.

In the Malnad region, Heavy rainfall and landslips have taken a toll on cash crops such as areca nut and coffee. “Short-duration crops and horticulture crops account for about 40% of the total crop loss,” an official said. After a delayed monsoon, farmers had just picked up pace with sowing when floods hit after heavy rainfall in the Malnad region and from overflowing rivers in the northern districts.

Bengaluru, Aug 7: Action will be taken against private hospitals that were violating government norms and charging exorbitant fees charges for the treatment of Covid-19 patients and suspects, said Water Resources Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi.

The government has taken action against private hospitals in Bengaluru and the same parameters would be adopted other cities, he said speaking to media persons in Belagavi on Friday.

Jarkiholi said that the government had noticed that patients were levied exorbitant charges for Covid-19 treatment. People too have complaints regarding the huge bills by these private hospitals and have demanded action.

“We are not under the obligation of any private hospital and stringent action will be taken against all erring and violating government tariffs. They will have to treat patients and follow the tariffs fixed,” he stated.

Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences District Hospital had been directed to install CCTV cameras in Covid-19 wards and install monitors at reception to facilitate monitoring of treatment and condition of the wards. BIMS management was taken to task for not following the directive and have been given a deadline to install CCTV cameras, Jarkiholi informed.

Holding the review of the Higher Education department, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa expressed interest in providing online education to students in higher educational institutes.

Yediyurappa directed the officials to look into the possibilities of extending online education from as early as Pre-University level so that the new method can easily be followed as they scale up the academic career.

Keeping in mind the less expenditure and online teaching being cost-effective, Yediyurappa said, “If you compare online teaching with the regular classroom teaching, it is not only cost-effective but also helps in savings in terms of resources. Officials must look into the new method and start introducing it as early as PU classes.”

Mangaluru, Jan 29: Days after some youths allegedly threatened to 'behead' local MLA and former Karnataka minister U T Khader during a pro-CAA rally here, the Dakshina Kannada district unit of the Congress on Wednesday urged the police to register a case against the culprits.

A video of the incident that went viral on social media showed the youths raising slogans that they will "cut off his limbs and chop off his head if necessary" during the rally organised by the BJP in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act on Monday.

Addressing reporters here, District Congress Committee president Harish Kumar demanded that the police register a case on their own against the youths. He said if prompt action was not taken against the youths seen in the video, the Congress will launch an agitation before the office of the Commissioner of Police.

When asked by reporters about the video, Khader had on Tuesday brushed aside the threat, saying he had not taken it seriously. The MLA had also said he did not file a complaint with police as he had concern for the families of the youths.
