Karnataka man loses Rs 33 lakh to ‘Italian’ girlfriend after crazy online chat

Bengaluru, Sept 20: In a fresh case of online matrimonial fraud, a 45-year-old man from Karnataka’s Chikkaballapura has lost Rs 33 lakh to his dream girl whom he had met on a matrimonial site.

A helpless R K Muniraja, an electrician by profession, has now approached police seeking justice after his dream of leading a blissful, married life with newfound girlfriend from Italy came crashing down.

Muniraja’s story started after he divorced his wife and registered himself on a matrimonial website.

Masters in sociology, Muniraja met Daksha Patel J online on August 31. After frequent chatting, she expressed interest in him and said she wanted to marry him.

She claimed she’s rich, but had been denied the kind of love he showered on her. She told him she would convince her parents about the marriage and transfer Rs 1.5 crore to his account before relocating to India.

On September 8, she told him she was heading to India with Rs 1.5 crore in foreign currency. Later, she called him and said she has been detained at Delhi airport by customs officials for carrying a huge amount of cash.

She told Muniraja she needed to pay the customs officials to receive a clearance certificate for the foreign currency and sought money in Indian rupees from him.

Help poor, needy by not cutting their salaries: Karnataka CM

Bengaluru, Apr 4: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has appealed to employers not to cut salaries of their maids, servants and drivers who are unable to attend work due to the current lockdown situation in the country.

He said compassionate gesture of employers will support the poor and needy.

"I request all the employers not to cut salaries of their maids, servants, drivers etc., who are not able to work due to social distancing. Your compassionate gesture will support the poor and needy to overcome this hard time. FightBackKarnataka CoronavirusPandemic," the Chief Minister said in a tweet.

Karnataka govt puts on hold decision to drop some chapters from social science textbooks

Bengaluru, Jul 31: The Karnataka government on Wednesday put on hold a controversial proposal to drop certain chapters, including on Islam, Christianity, Tipu Sultan and his father Hyder Ali, from social science textbooks to reduce the 2020-21 syllabi for students in classes 1-10.

Citing the COVID-19 pandemic and the disruption caused to the academic calendar of the year, the government had earlier dropped the chapter on Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali from the Class 7 social science textbook, saying chapters on Tipu Sultan have been retained in the Class 6 and 10 textbooks.

The move did not go down well with the opposition, which saw certain ulterior motives behind the decision.

Apparently under sharp criticism, the Department of Public Instruction issued a new notification on Wednesday "on the directions of the Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar".

There is a delay in opening the schools during the academic year 2020-21 due to COVID-19 pandemic, said the latest order.

In this context, the order said, chapters were dropped to fit in 120 days of the academic year for classes 1 to 10 and the same was published in the department's website.

"However, on the directions of the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, the decision to drop certain chapters has been put on hold. A review will be done following which the deleted chapters will be uploaded in the website," the order read.

Earlier in the day, Mr Kumar had issued a statement, saying that the decision to truncate the syllabus has not been finalised yet. He also made it clear that his department would not remove chapters unnecessarily.

Former chief minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah had attacked the government on the issue.

"The government, which has failed to control the spread of coronavirus, is using it as an opportunity to push its clandestine agenda of saffronising the textbooks," Siddaramaiah tweeted.

Mangaluru violence: ADGP holds meeting with senior cops

Mangaluru, Jan 5: Against the backdrop of Mangalore violence of December 19, Additional Director General of Police of Karnataka Amar Kumar Pandey visited the city and held a meeting with senior police officers.

According to senior police officials here on Sunday, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Muslim Central Committee had planned to hold a protest against CAA at Nehru Maidan while the SKSSF had called for anti-CAA protest at State Bank area.

Though both the protests had been called off, there was an apprehension of a repeat incident of December 19 violence and hence the ADGP visited the city at the behest of state government and monitored the situation here for the entire day on Saturday.

The ADGP was unhappy that despite initial inputs and the imposition of Section 144 in the city, the situation on that day escalated to a level where police had to resort to firing only in this city.
