Priyank Kharge, Karnataka Minister for IT and BT, on Tuesday, wrote to the Election Commission of India (ECI), seeking an electronic voting machine (EVM) challenge to test the machines for errors.

In his letter to Achal Kumar Jyoti, the Chief Election Commissioner, Kharge has proposed that the EVM challenge be jointly hosted by the Karnataka government and the ECI, where stakeholders of the scientific community can be invited to participate in testing the EVMs.

Unlike the EVM challenge hosted by the ECI in May 2017, where only political parties participated, Kharge has said that the challenge this time should be thrown open to technocrats, scientists, corporates, R&D institutes, start-ups and tinkerers.

He has sought that the ECI provide 250 randomly selected EVMs to plan and execute the challenge, under the overall supervision of the ECI.

For the challenge, individuals or interested parties can be allowed to test the EVMs using instruments of their choice. Design documents, test descriptions and results, security procedures used by the ECI can be provided for the same. Results obtained can be made public and long-term testing by a team of experts can be initiated, if necessary, he has said.

"The challenge needs to go beyond political parties and should be opened to all the young and bright minds in the country to ensure a pure scientific engagement with the community without political agenda. If there are technical flaws, we can solve it together and if there are no errors, we restore the people's faith in our democratic process," his letter states.

Kochi, Mar 1:Adheringto a policy of "zero tolerance" towards clergy who sexually exploit minors, Pope Francis has expelled a Kerala priestconvicted of rape from all priestly duties and rights, according to church officials.

Syro-Malabar Church priest Robin Vadakkumchery is currently serving a jail term for impregnating a 16-year-old girl in Mananthavady diocese.

"Vadakkumchery has been dispensed from the exercise of priestly duties and rights. That means he has been reduced to the state of a layman", a Church official told PTI.

He was suspended from priestly duties soon after the news about his crime was reported in early 2017.

A POCSO court in Thalassery last year had sentenced Vadakkumchery to 20 years of Rigorous Imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs three lakh on him.

The priest, 50, was the vicar of the local church in Kottiyur in Kannur district and manager at the school where the victim was studying.

He was arrested two years ago while trying to flee to Canada.

The Vatican's action came two years after Pope Francis made it clear that all bishops should adhere to a policy of "zero tolerance" for clergy who sexually exploit children.

Bengaluru, Aug 8: Congress is confused on the Ram Mandir issue and in dilemma to take a firm stand fearing loss of Muslim or Hindu votes, according to BJP leader and Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi.

"Congress opposed BJP's stand on constructing Ram Mandir in Ayodya, it called Lord Ram fictional and even decided to break the Ramsetu. Now, Congressmen are speaking the other way. Congress cannot think beyond vote bank politics which is in its DNA itself. Congressmen think that they are born to be in power," he said while speaking to media persons.

He said that BJP is all for constructing a grand Ram Mandir peacefully and legally, due to its conviction and not for politics. Same was the case with the revocation of Article 370 for Jammu & Kashmir. Anti-national activities have comparatively come down now.

Some people do not want everything going smoothly in the country, and Congress and Asaduddin Owaisi are among them, Joshi opined, adding that the Congress is merely frustrated.
