Karnataka political crisis: MLAs stay glued to TV as resort stay drags on

Bengaluru, Jul 17: MLAs of the three political camps — BJP, Congress and JD(S) — stayed glued to television sets for the most part on Tuesday as they kept pace with proceedings in the Supreme Court, hoping a verdict would end their “ordeal” of staying away from home. It eventually was a mixed day for the elected representatives. While BJP MLAs remained “gung-ho” about their prospects, the mood in the Congress and JD(S) camps was sombre.

BJP MLAs appeared relaxed after arguments in the SC seemed to be “favouring” their intentions of forming the government. From playing cricket to having a lazy day out, the MLAs were hardly bothered as they were confident the SC verdict would favour them.

“We are not too worried about the outcome. We are sure of forming the government,” said a senior BJP legislator.

The Congress camp appeared edgy. Footage of CLP leader Siddaramaiah keenly watching SC proceedings on his phone emerged. The MLAs moved from a star hotel to a resort off Ballari Road, just outside Bengaluru, and spent most of the day closeted in their new accommodation. The Congress leadership remained incommunicado for most of the day.

For the JD(S) MLAs, it was a day of waiting for “instructions” from their senior leaders. Through the day, chief minister HD Kumaraswamy spent time with his father and JD(S) patriarch HD Deve Gowda keeping track of proceedings in the SC. Towards the evening, Kumaraswamy stayed holed up in his star hotel room. He had scheduled a meeting with the MLAs late in the evening.
